Editorial Reviews

Review

"There's something there to offend everybody. But I think a lot of it rings true. She so clearly is not saying the academically correct things on every issue. Carol avoids academic correctness at every turn, and that lends some authority to what she says." Kent Syverud, Dean, Vanderbilt University Law School, as quoted by the Tennessean

"This book deserves to be taken very seriously even by those, like myself, who disagree strongly with some of its premises." George M. Fredrickson, Stanford University

"...a courageous book. It is certain to generate controversy. Scholars and concerned citizens may not fully agree with Carol Swain's thought provoking thesis on the rise of white nationalism and its implications for the future of American race relations. However, the force and intensity of her arguments will compel them to take the book seriously." William Julius Wilson, Harvard University

"...provacative and well researched..." Magill's Literary Annual

"It is the great virtue of Carol Swain's work that she is willing to conduct honest inquiry into racial questions and bluntly tell the truth as she finds it. Drawing on the tools of social science as well as her own extraordinary personal experience, she shines a powerful light on issues ranging from crime and illegitimacy to affirmative action and the role of religion in promoting racial harmony. People across the ideological spectrum have a great deal to learn from this thoughtful and courageous scholar." Robert P. George; Princeton University

"This is a disturbing book. Carol Swain bravely describes a world of white nationalists who reject racial integration. But where the establishment ignores these groups, Swain argues that the best response is debate rather than denial. The nationalists draw support because they express widespread white grievances that our leaders refuse to face -especially runaway immigration and affirmative action. Like Jefferson, Swain hears a firebell in the night." Lawrence M. Mead; New York University

"She brings a fresh and vital perspective to any discussion of race relations." The New Leader

"...very strongly recommended for Political Science and Social Issues reference collections and supplemental reading lists." Wisconsin Bookwatch

"...extremely provocative book--marks the arrival of a bold new voice in the American race relations debate." First Things

"[Swain's] willingness to challenge received opinion and defy the expected categories of our stale identity politics is sorely needed if America is ever to have an open and honest debate about race. Swain's book is an important contribution to such a debate and will be of interest to all those, whatever their policy preferences and whatever their race, who wish to see it take place." The Review of Politics

Product Description

This book presents ten alarmingly candid interviews by some of the most prominent members of what co-editors Carol M. Swain and Russ Nieli warn is a growing White Nationalist movement. The ten people interviewed in this volume make statements that are sure to shock, amuse, challenge, and provoke readers. Their remarks are of particular interest, Swain and Nieli believe, for understanding how the many race-conscious whites who lie outside the integrationist consensus on racial issues in America view developments that have taken place in the United States since the Civil Rights movement. If current trends continue, the authors predict, these ideas will become more common, especially as whites become a diminishing portion of the U.S. population. They argue that the claims of white nationalists need to be aired in open, public forums, where they can be vigorously challenged and subjected to refutation. Carol M. Swain is Professor of Political Science and Professor of Law at Vanderbilt University. She is the author of Black Faces, Black Interests (Harvard, 1993). She has published numerous articles including the op-eds in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and the Chronicle of Higher Education and lectures widely across the country, on issues ranging from congressional redistricting to the future of affirmative action programs. Swain was one of twelve children born into rural poverty, is a high school dropout, and a first generation college student who started her education at a community college and went on to receive a doctorate and law degree. She spent the first ten years of her career teaching at Princeton University, where she was a tenured professor of political science and public policy at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. A former Fulbright Scholar, Russ Nieli is currently a lecturer in politics at Princeton University. His areas of academic interest run the gammet from Wittgenstein to race relations, and he is currently working on a book on the decline of the inner-city African American communities in the decades following the Civil Rights Revolution of the 1960's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book on the racalist right, February 22, 2006
The racialist right in the United States has grown substantially in recent years. Editors Carol M. SWAIN and Russ NIELI rightfully point out the reasons for this:
* the growing number of legal and illegal non-white immigrants
* resentment of affirmative action, which favours minorities
* the exponential growth of the internet, which allows like-
minded individuals to share their views and concerns and form
communities
The editors contend that white nationalism in the United States will continue to grow. In a lengthy introductory essay(90 pages, almost a third of the book) SWAIN/NIELI, who do not share the views expressed by the interviewees, point out that race related issues and white nationalism need to be addressed (and rebuted)in open debate instead of being refuted out of hand. SWAIN/NIELI elaborate at length on what they call "American exceptionalism" (i.e. the relative success of the multi-ethnic/multi-racial US society whereas in general multiethnic/-racial societies tend to break apart; cf. former Austrian-Hungarian empire,Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, among others). The reasons for the success of the "American exceptionalism" according to SWAIN/NIELI are:
* a self-definition of nationhood based on liberty and equality
* the future orientation of the American Dream (immigrants
tended to break with ethnic strifes of the past and
concentrated on economic success in the USA)
* the unifying factor of the English language
* the colour-blind theory of justice
* theological arguments to the effect that all people are
created equal.
(I would like to stress here that I am only refering the views expressed by SWAIN/NIELI in the introductory essay and do not share them.)
The remainder of the book consists of interviews conducted with ten white nationalists:
1.) White rights advocats
Jared TAYLOR - founder of American Renaissance magazine
Reno WOLFE - who heads a pro-white organisation, very
similar to the black NAACP
Michael LEVIN - author of WHY RACE MATTERS: RACE DIFFERENCES
AND WHAT THEY MEAN
2.) White separatists
Don BLACK - who heads the stormfront website
David DUKE - this former presidential candidate needs no
introduction
Michael H. HART - a Jewish scholar who promotes the
separation of the USA into four parts along racial lines
( a white, a black, a hispanic and a mixed race state)
3.) White christian
Dan GAYMAN - a pastor of the "church of Israel", who argues
racial separation from a theological standpoint
4.) White supremacists
Matthew HALE - "pontifex maximus" of the World Church of the
Creator
Lisa TURNER - also with the World Church of the Creator
the late William PIERCE - author of the infamous TURNER
DIARIES and the lesser known follow-up HUNTER (both
available here from amazon) and founder of the National
Alliance

Truth be told I was for the most part very impressed with what the interviewees said. Contrary to popular belief these proponents of white nationalism are very educated and eloquent. They are not afraid to tell facts, which are very political incorrect in today's multi-cultural society, e.g. about substantial differences in intelligence along racial lines (a recurring theme in the interviews) or exceptionally high crime rates among blacks (David DUKE: "...we have a situation in Washington D.C., where we have over 50 percent of all young, black males between the ages 18 and 35 being in jail, on parole, or probation, or being involved in the criminal justice system at any one moment.",p. 182) Even if you oppose views expressed by the interviewees, you will find most interviews intellectually stimulating (as even the editors contend). I was particularly impressed with DUKE, LEVIN and HART. You may want to skip the interview with Dan GAYMAN, though, unless you are particularly interested in White christianity, as the tiresome bit (chockfull with quotes from the Bible) clearly shows GAYMAN's trade as preacher and is more a sermon than an interview.
Overall, an execellent introduction to white nationalism! Hugely recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Recognizing bias, February 4, 2004
By A Customer
From reading the text, I find that the major reasons for the swelling White Nationalist movement include:

1) Racist policies such as Affirmative action, and Racial quotas

2) Outsourcing of American jobs to the third world

3) Import of cheap labor and undermining wages and living
standards through illegal mexican and latin american
immigrants

4) Loss of mainstream American culture and values due to
competing interests inherent in multiculturalism

5) Destruction and displacement of Euro-Americans through
third world immigration, and high third-world birth rates

6) Neo-con driven war in the Mid-east, due to Islamic attention
to American "zionism"

7) Restrictions of free speech due to Political Correctness

My appraisal is that these are all valid concerns. Considering the fact that all of these issues are worsening rather than improving, I suspect that White Nationalism will continue to gain momentum throughout the West. The author makes it clear where she stands on the issue. Therefore, I find it thorough and well written but biased. For a comprehensive background written from a WN perspective, visit

3.0 out of 5 stars bought on reviews, July 11, 2009
These interviewers are correct, but it might have been a better book if there were not so much contextualizing of other people's voices. In the final analysis, it was mostly commentary and so it was as if the academics were giving people a "voice"---but not really. The "voice" of the men were mostly offered so they could be "interpreted" by the editors, who ---in this way--- are really not editors at all, but rather filters for experience, attempting to guide and manipulate responses.

Ms. Swain is an African American affirmative action baby, family of 11 kids, poor, married at 16, and much more, then given an "Ivy League" education, and passed through despite difficulties---so when reading the "editorial" one has to "consider the source." For obvious reasons of what she's had given to her, she is highly invested in the system that produced her and is willing to perpetuate it (why she was put forward one imagines). She's not one who will ever look deeply at the true horrors that have resulted, the inverse-morality in the culture, the radical demograhic shifts, the violence of children totally shut out, not only from a country their own families (who really live there) tried to create so they would have a home, the distaste with which so many really react to the culture created by her viewpoint, to the point that many 'best and brightest' have simply left any sort of public life. From reading about her, I've had the impression she feels that she's "made good" on her affirmative action.

So, the commentary should be read against the highly biased, and politically invested reasons this was brought forth.
