5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of quality excerpts, May 29, 2008
By Dave English (Arizona, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
What a cool book! Used often as a required textbook for Philosophy 101 classes, this is a valuable reference for a lifetime. Most of the book is multi-page excerpts from some of the great thinkers in human history. Plato, Laozi, James, Martin Luther King, Engels, Nietzsche, Dalai Lama, Richard Dawkins, Kuhn, on and on. It's neatly organized into twelve chapters; within each there are about six excerpts from different books with an insightful introduction and reading questions. Chapters include Is There a god? Is Knowledge Possible? What Am I? and other non-trival questions.

Reading this comprehensive anthology gives a broad literate education without the months (years?) it would take to read through all the original texts, if you could somehow know what they'd be. A worthwhile reference and a jumping off point into some classic books of human thought.

2.0 out of 5 stars Expensive, difficult text for beginning philosophy student, April 6, 2009
By J. C. Morgan (United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I teach introductory philosophy at the college level and was assigned this book three years ago. While it does have a multi-cultural approach it is very expensive, the introductory sections are not all that good, and it fails to have a section by itself dealing with the issue of death, which is comparable to having a text on religion without a unit on God. There are better, much cheaper books that are better suited to beginning students of philosophy. I am changing using this text after continuing complaints from students about its difficulty and cost. Students are the best consumers here. Perhaps a two semester, more advanced course in philosophy might better use this text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Philosophers: Then and Now., January 7, 2001
I liked Voices of Wisdom. This book is a very educational tool. It covers ideas and articles from such philosophers as Jean Paul Sartre, David Hume, Socrates, and etc... The book has a wide variety of ideas, and arguments. This book is good for a student just beginning to learn philosophy. I would be pleased to recommend this book to anyone curious about the subject.
