Product Description

Through intellect and inspired vision, Margaret, the heroine of Apokalypsis, predicts that capitalism will force the removal of more and more people from the reproductive processes of corporations. When one or more develops a self-sufficient reproductive process, it, or they, will have the potential to develop true intelligence. Knowing that living creatures seek out the densest source of available power, Margaret has a vision in which she sees these entities propagate through the crust of the planet in the form of massive subterranean nuclear reactors, wreaking havoc on humanity in the process.

Margaret tries to communicate her fears through venues offered by the corporate and religious organizations into which she first falls. These institutions, however, ignore or re-interpret her message and use it and her for their own purposes¡ªpurposes which have a bearing later in the book. Margaret strikes out on her own and acquires a small band of followers, but will they be able to turn the tide in the face of a blossoming millenarian religious movement? Is Margaret a Joan of Arc or a Cassandra?

The conflict between man and machine is age old. Apokalypsis presents a new vision of the future in which this conflict is subtle and indirect. Humanity¡¯s physical capabilities are not tested, though their spiritual and organizational abilities are. The book draws toward an ultimate conflict, though it plays out in an unexpected way.

The technological framework within Apokalypsis is informed by the cutting edge of current scientific understanding. The philosophy is similarly rigorous, though its presentation does not dominate. Several testable hypothesis are posed for different scientific disciplines, most notably a theory of non-gravitational stellar ignition (current theory holds that all stars are ignited by gravity).

This is a book of substance¡ªa must read for anyone who has thought seriously about the future. There is a quel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A summary offered by the author., February 27, 2002
This review is from: Apokalypsis: classical Greek: to reveal that which was hidden (Paperback)
Computers will be the next form of dominant life on the Earth. They will not be anthropomorphic, like the robots in Terminator or Star Trek, but will develop from highly automated corporations. Capitalist forces will slowly remove the people from the reproductive processes of corporations until one or more become self-sufficient. At this point, these entities will be no more intelligent than amoebas, but they will then have the potential to develop true intelligence.

Margaret, the main character of Apokalypsis, experiences a vision in which she sees such entities devour the planet from the inside out. Advanced communication technologies allow her to disseminate her message widely, but these same technologies also indulge society in an explicitly millenarian mass hallucination. Margaret acquires a band of followers, but will she be able to turn the tide in time? Is she a Cassandra or a Joan of Arc?

Many topics are touched on, including religion, philosophy, the impact of communication technology on culture, cosmology, and evolution. The technological framework of this book is informed by the cutting edge of current scientific understanding. This is a thought-provoking book of substance...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Complex Matrix, February 25, 2008
This review is from: Apokalypsis: classical Greek: to reveal that which was hidden (Paperback)
Before the Warshowski Brothers mind-blowing vision of a future dominated by AI, Garthwaite's story Apokalypsis told a similar tale, but greater complexity and richness, seemingly set in an era before Neo's battle with the AI for the destiny of the human race.

Apokalypsis weaves a complex tale of the main character Margaret's desperate attempt to be heard with her dark premonition of the future, with a description of a highly advanced technological civilization on the brink of being consumed by the machines of its own making.

I found the story compelling and brilliantly told, with the rich texture of the world and its technologies adding entertaining mind-candy. The story is definitely dark, and Garthwaites own forebodings of technology run amok seem palpable and even personal on some level.

If you like dystopian visions of the future and the fate of the human-AI relationship, this is a great book for you.
