Grade 1-3--This book features lots of humor and harmless high jinks for newly fluent readers. After Pirates Pete and Joe do their chores (digging up treasure, counting coins, and re-burying their loot), they head off to play at the Pirate Queen's lighthouse. With a bit of trepidation, they enter her lighthouse castle and announce, " 'Ding-dong!… Pirates calling!'" With swords drawn and rattling, they search under her bed and in the hot tub, and finally find her as she arrives with arms full of seafood. It turns out that she is their mother. After they eat, play, and go bowling, she reads them a bedtime story. These pirates could be any age, adding a dimension to their pretend play. The lively, accessible text is extended with cartoon illustrations featuring bold colors and characters whose exaggerated features will be welcome by readers who need a break from cutesy, pastel images.
