4.0 out of 5 stars Slender, but seminal, volume of libertarian thought., April 20, 2001
By John T. O'Donnell (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This was the first book about libertarianism I ever read. I found it on the library shelf in 1973. I had just read "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Robert Heinlein, and been struck by a question that one character asks another; "Under what circumstances is it moral for a group to do that which is not moral for a member of that group to do alone?" My answer was "under no circumstances." This, of course, left me in the position (at 15) of having ideas diametrically opposed to all the conventional politics of the day, and most of the unconventional politics, such as the New Left. When I read Tucille's book, his positions seemed to describe what I had decided I believed in as the result of answering Heinlein's question the way I did.

The book may appear dated now, as some of it addresses political conflicts of the day. But its argument remains concise and well presented.

In passing, Tucille wrote another, more personal book, "It Usually Begins With Ayn Rand," that is hilarious if you know anything about libertarian circles.
