Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4--In the seventh installment in the series, young Heart Avamir continues her quest to discover her heritage. Although reading is forbidden for commoners, she owns a mysterious book that she took from the home of evil Lord Dunraven. She reads about Castle Avamir and, hoping that the name may hold a tie to her family, she takes her unicorn and goes to find it. Heart befriends a neglected serving maid and learns about two girls who had once lived at the castle, but fled in fear of Dunraven and his men. In the meantime, the evil lord is hunting for Heart as well. She manages to stay ahead of him until she reaches her destination, where she is welcomed by a strange little man who describes how all the children of the castle family were sent away for safety. But, before he can reveal more, Dunraven and his band sweep into the courtyard and take the old man away as a prisoner. Heart resolves to follow them. More a serial than a series, this book begins right where True Heart (S & S, 2003) left off and ends with a cliff-hanger, to be continued next time. Character relationships and plot elements are continued from the previous six books with limited background exposition. The brief text and short, simple writing style will attract transitional readers and the unicorn theme and the multibook serial will appeal to fans of the earlier titles.--Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL

Product Description
It has been a long, hard winter, and the Gypsies are glad to be leaving Lord Levin's mountains for the sunny plains of Lord Kaybale's lands. But that means time is running out for Heart. The old stories say that Castle Avamir is higher than the clouds, deep in a valley, under the stars, and over the moon.

It makes no sense -- but if Heart can't solve the riddle, she might never find a safe haven for her beloved unicorns.

Spring!  It actually remembered how to rain here in southern California this year, so everything is green, my tree ferns are very happy and  my orchids are blooming... I can't believe nearly a year has gone by since my last post here.  My first young adult book is doing really well. It won a finalists' silver medal at The National Book Awards--an incredible honor.

The first new Hoofbeats title was published last fall and the second one will come out this Spring.  The cover art is lovely--thanks once more to the wonderful artist, Robert Papp.

Lara and the Gray Mare, set in Medieval Ireland, is being recorded for an audio book.

Thanks for all the messages hoofbeats readers have left at www.kathleenduey.com

More good news! I think I am finally going to get to write The Faeries' Promise.   It will be a four-book set. The story happens in the same lands where The Unicorn's Secret takes place.  Some of the same characters will be in it along with many new ones. The fairies have been hiding for a long time, and for a good reason. I can't wait to start writing and find out what happens.

Please do whatever you can to make the world a better place.
I will too, I promise.

I have been traveling a lot.  Dubai and Abu Dhabi schools invited me for two weeks of school visits in March. Amazing. Every trip is a treasure to me, a revelation.  I had a wonderful time, full of learning, great students and dedicated teachers.  Dubai is an astounding place, buildings are growing like bamboo--they get taller overnight. There are huge cultural communities, shops, food, music and art from many other countries grace the city--a fabulous mix of traditions. Abu Dhabi is growing. too, and it is a blooming cultural center--art, music, architecture, organic farming, thousands of trees planted, another fascinating, many-cultured city.  There are pictures up on my website  www.kathleenduey.com  Just click "blog" and scroll down a bit.
I spent a few days in San Antonio, TX last week--I always enjoy both the river walk and the museums.  Great food, great company, great city, I love going there.
Next (April 22-27) week I will be in Pittsburgh...one of the prettiest cities in the country. I get to spend a week in schools--something I love doing.  I hope to visit the Cathedral of Learning this time.  http://www.umc.pitt.edu/tour/tour-080.html
Books: Librarians at the Texas Library Association conference had wonderful things to say about Skin Hunger, the first of a new fantasy trilogy for adults and teens coming out from Atheneum in June.  It is a deep, dark book and a contains a lot of both my heart and my intellect.  It is scary to write this close to the bone...but it is free
