Editorial Reviews

Review
A solid stock title anthology of dark tales from a future where science and society may be twisted but the human connection still remains. Authors include Philip K Dick, Iain M Banks, Kim Newman, Kurt Vonnegut, Walter Mosley and many more. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description
This startling variety of science fiction suggests that as long as there are people there will also be police and criminals. Veteran editor Maxim Jakubowski and collaborator M. Christian have gathered over thirty visions of crime to come. The Mammoth Book of Future Cops features classic and specially commissioned works from such authors as the multi-award-winning Joe Haldeman, hard science scribe Stephen Baxter, crime writer-crossover Richard Paul Russo, dark fantasist China Mieville, steampunk Paul DiFilippo, and many more. Their imaginings range from the highest-tech law enforcement to virtual criminality in cyberspace. In Paul McAuley’s chilling "Prison Dreams" convicts are given implants that monitor their brains—and are punished for illegal thoughts and dreams. "A Scanner Darkly" (soon to be a major motion picture) by Blade Runner–author Philip K. Dick turns the tables on an undercover cop whose computer-enhanced anonymity results in an assignment to investigate himself. In William Nolan’s "Violation," the author of Logan’s Run explores the laws of a world where machines judge and pass down sentences to human beings. And in Nebula and Hugo winner Mike Resnick’s "Me and My Shadow," an amnesiac tries to discover why he was sentenced to the "erasure" of his whole identity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader, September 22, 2007
Basically what it says, so if you are a fan of the detective or crime story and are interested in a bit of science fiction to go along with that, then this anthology would serve you well, as plenty of stories in this book told with that style, as well as the odd straight short more standard sf story.

Quite well done, carrying a 3.47 average throughout.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mammoth, yes, groundbreaking, no., March 4, 2004
By Lisa J. Steele (Bolton, MA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The title is a bit of a misnomer -- the stories are as much about private eyes and criminals as about police in the future.

Most of the stories have a strong disoptia tone, which can be wearying after nearly 500 pages. A few stories have clever ideas or societies that I would have liked to see more of, but many seemed typical of the genre.

With 30+ stories, quality varies. I didn't find much that stuck with me after putting the book down, but there was enough variety to keep me reading until the last.

For the folks who like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing they'll like.
