Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7–This attractive volume, originally published in 2001, has been revised and expanded to include the 2004 election. Sixteen pages of new material include sidebar spreads on the role of vice presidents, information on the Electoral College, past presidents as elder statesmen, presidential security, and the expanding global role of the president. The short profiles provide essential information for report writers. The book includes an appended chart of election results from George Washington through George W. Bush's second term, and information on America's changing role in the world, the White House, military conflicts throughout our history, political parties and campaigns, and important historical events of the time. The beautiful illustrations (including full-page reproductions of the official presidential portraits), current information, and user-friendly layout make this title a solid addition for most libraries.–Karen Sutherland, Bartlett Public Library, IL

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. Bausum's new edition is -extensively updated and includes a foreword by George W. Bush. As in her glorious With Courage and Cloth (2004), lavish use of period and modern illustrations, quotes, solid research, and the kind of offbeat facts so dear to readers young and older are included: Madison was the smallest president, at five feet, four inches; John Quincy Adams swam nude in the Potomac; Franklin Pierce was both handsome and a drunkard; James Garfield was the first left-handed president. In between the biographies are lively essays on presidential campaigns, vice presidents, First Ladies, children in the White House, and other related information. Bausum gives a real sense of the person behind the office in every case, providing nicknames, age at inauguration, and names of children. A valuable resource. GraceAnne DeCandido

If ever a book was designed for opening the eyes of Jr. High students, as well as adults looking for a bit of a "refresher course," this is it. It presents our presidents in a quick, concise manner, that makes one want to delve further into their lives and times. Without being ponderous, and/or preachy, it is informative, while also being one heck of a pageturner. Get it. Read it. Share it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our Countrys Presidents:Completely Revsed and Expanded, April 7, 2008

I got this book for my 6yr old son because of his interest in presidents and other important figures used on monies. We read about one every night before bed. In less than 2 months he can name all 43 presidents in random order, and also knows who is on each bill. also my 4yr old daughter can name all 43 by the pictures but it wont' be long. Can you do that, I can't. This is an excellant book to get them started on and to keep him interested in history. They are both excited about going to DC to see some of the monuments.
