In medieval times, monks spent years translating and reproducing texts for church libraries, and they often embellished their script with "gilded patterns or designs," giving birth to the art of illumination. This kit offers a brief history of the process, which began in the ninth century, and includes the basic materials one would need to get started: a brush, a calligraphy pen, inks, paper and paint. The book guides aspiring illuminators through calligraphy exercises and details four simple projects (a bookmark, a greeting card, a gift box and a frame decorated with lettering) that are nicely complemented by example photos and templates. Those who enjoy making personalized, artistic gifts may find this technique a nice addition to their repertoire, but the guide doesn’t deliver much beyond the basics.

The book was a great source for a beginner like me. The book covers a brief history about where and what Illumination is. It shows several types of script, foundation hand, italic, versals and gothic. It then moves on to decorate your letters. At the end it has several projects that begin fairly simple then advances introducing a new technique each project so that when you complete all of the projects you have practiced all of the techniques that the book covers.

If you find the projects just a tad too simple they offer small additional "challenges" so to speak to practice even further. This book doesn't cover all of the designs, all of the alphabets or extensively practice all of the techniques; however it never makes claims that it does. The purpose of the book is to give you a basic foundation, and then it wants you to use your creativity and imagination to push further.

I felt the book was well worth the price. It gives you the tools to do all of the exercises in the book (minus the practice drawing paper) and tells you what to look for when you purchase inks, pens, etc. It provides a brief introduction on how to make your own, as well as a brief history about pens, paper and other tools. The kit also contains nice cardstock to use when you get a good handle on the art.

I gave this a five because it met my requirements, 1. It was priced fairly 2. The product was as advertised. 3. It was good quality, they gave you enough ink to do the projects and have left over, good quality brush and pens, the paper is nice enough to make gift worthy projects.

I have wanted to start doing some Illumination and found this kit to be just what I needed. I didn't want to have anything to expensive if I found I didn't like it. I love the set with its pen and brush. I have enjoyed getting started. Glad I bought it.

I have several other books on calligraphy and illumination and have found this to be one of the most informative and instructive. You can make many beautiful illuminated projects using techniques learned here.
