Tickle, the religion editor for Publishers Weekly, uses her personal observations and opinions of religious book traffic to present a thesis of the pattern of the American soul as well as a guide for those trying to understand the current interest in the sacred. Tickle explores historical and sociological events, such as Hiroshima, space travel, and the changing role of women in society, which have made Americans a nation of questers. By extending her exploration to the patterns of literary consumption, she arrives at an accurate description of the direction of the questers' path. From the growth of religious materials, including Christian fiction and New Age books espousing concepts such as morality and afterlife, plus Bibles and saint books containing art reproductions allowing idolatry to reemerge for the devotional, a second reformation is emerging with modern views of religion breaking down to reveal the old dogma.
