Product Description

This guide provides creative knitters with a collection of three-dimensional figures from history. From the ancient world, meet an Egyptian man and lady, a rabbi and a high priest. An Italian Renaissance lady emerges elegantly from the 15th century, Queen Elizabeth I rules in the 16th century, and there are the Pilgrim Fathers of the 17th century and the ostentatious Madame de Pompadour from the 18th century. All these characters and others are represented in over 50 full-colour photographs, together with historical facts and knitting know-how, drawings, knitting patterns, and details of yarns and stitches. There are instructions for making a basic body, embroidering features on a face and for knitting clothing, accessories, jewellery and even underclothes. The book should be of interest to knitters, embroiderers, doll collectors, doll-makers, historical costume enthusiasts and fashion students.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a lovely book, January 30, 2008
By Lills "Prize Winning Craft Junkie" (Middle Swan, Western Australia) - See all my reviews
This is a lovely book and has some great ideas and beautiful clothes in it.
Personally I don't like the dolls. I do however have a doll pattern by Alan Dart for a pirate that I can adapt the clothes for.
As I have a few of Jans other books I should have known that the dolls would be the way they are.
Don't get me wrong I do really like this book and am glad that I bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for novices, May 18, 2007
By Helena Handbasket (Suburbia near Dallas, TX) - See all my reviews
Jan Messent's work is, as always, visually stunning. I own several of her books but it has taken me a few years to not be too intimidated to try some of her projects. For advanced knitters, I would highly recommend any of her books, but it was this one that got me hooked.
