Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3?These titles from Canada succeed with mixed results. Dairy Farming does not mention that there are many breeds of dairy cows, but discusses the history of pasteurization. It has too many broad general statements that lead to wrong conclusions. Two photos and a drawing show unsanitary conditions in the milking parlor. Cynthia McFarland's Cows in the Parlor (Atheneum, 1990; o.p.) is a better choice. Sheep Farming is more successful. Health concerns and nutrition are briefly addressed. Different types of wool are mentioned, as are the different kinds of sheep dogs and guard animals that sheep farmers use. The series title derives its name from the third paragraph of text that instructs readers to shout, "Hooray for..." the next time they encounter a product made from wool or milk. This may be intended to enliven the text but it comes across as silly. The format is attractive with large print; colorful, clear photographs; and appropriate illustrations. Unfamiliar terms are printed in boldface and defined in both the text and a glossary. Sheep Farming is an adequate purchase if needed; pass on Dairy Farming.?Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS

Review

Author Bobbie Kalman describes aspects of commercial agriculture with enough text to bring clarity to the subject without overwhelming a young reader. This is a valuable series. . . -- Library Talk, Sept. /Oct. 1998

With photos and clear illustrations we get the information we need about the operation of such farms. The text gives the child researcher a clear look at the workings of a farm, today and in the past -- Sally Bender, Brandon Sun --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars a farmer of 30+ years thought it was realistic, May 3, 2000
By Laura Payne-Bourcy (Syracuse, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hooray for Dairy Farming! (Hooray for Farming!) (Paperback)
I have never written a review to Amazon.com although I buy many of my childrens' books here. I grew up on a dairy farm, left a dairy farm and now work in a university setting studying rural education. At the same time, I desperately want my children to understand how a dairy farm as a "business" works - minus hormones thank you. My father is a steadfast dairy farmer of 30+ years enduring hard times and the lowest milk prices in 20 years as I write this review. When he read this book as the first "children's" book that he has read since I was perhaps five, he thought it was "realistic" and "authentic" and no he doesn't use hormones nor does he neglect to explain to my six year old daughter how important it is to care for the animals (in terms of diet or otherwise) that provide his livlihood. I resent the angry - flippant and frankly uninformed response of the other reviewers. While there may be issues that this book does not address, it made an honest attempt to portray the industry minus the politics that the other reviewers felt compelled to highlight. We have so many books for children focused on middle class and often urban or suburban professions. I was encouraged, relieved and sadly grateful that someone focused on my childhood for once. I logged into this site to buy this book for an Even Start program that serves a predominately rural, agrarian population. I consider myself an informed buyer and felt confident buying this book for children who seldom see "their existence" represented elsewhere.
