Amazon.com Review
The two keys to success on standardized achievement tests are relaxation and preparation. They depend on each other, of course, as what could relax a tester more than knowing what to expect? If any SAT II Subject Tests are in your future, the College Board's got all the answers (and all the questions) you'll need to wield your No. 2 pencil with confidence and flair. Since they write and administer the SAT, Real SAT II: Subject Tests is authoritative and believable. Using recent actual tests in 18 subjects--writing, literature, American history, world history, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, and 10 languages--the book evokes the look and feel of the real thing. Just convince a friend to sit in front of you looking unhappy, and you're all set!

While the practice tests are the meat of the book, there is some gravy. The College Board explains exactly how each test is graded, the best strategy for each type of question, and when to take each test (some are best taken right after a class is finished, others after the material has settled a bit). Additional instructions for obtaining free tapes for the language tests and for scoring essay tests over the Internet are included, making this the most complete guide to the SAT II Subject Tests. Put your pencils down now. --Rob Lightner

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says, June 27, 2000
By Vincent S. Yeung (Cambridge, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This book does what it says: it gives you one complete REAL SAT II test on every single subject EXCEPT Biology and Korean. Since many people take the Bio E/M test these days, this book is marred by the fact that it doesn't have a complete Bio E/M test (only half and not "REAL") and they seem to be easier than the actual test I took.

But otherwise, on all the other subjects, this book gives you a test that was actually used before. Plus, it gives you the scales for the particular tests, answers and difficulty of the question (no explanations though).

If you are buying this book for the language SAT II's with listening, you can get the tapes for free by sending the attached postcard to College Board. You should get it because the price you paid for the book includes the tapes and if you don't have the tapes you can't do the listening tests. Request beforehand since they take a few weeks to ship.

These book gives you the confirmation of whether you know the stuff or not after you finish your study program. From then on you can work on your weak spots or sit back and relax as you've done well on the practice (don't get too cocky though =) as the SAT 2 tests change slowly but gradually over time, and so the practice might be considerably different from the one you actually take).

Take this from someone who's got 800 on two SAT 2 tests, and 790, 770, 740, 730, and 700 on 5 others.

Oh and one more thing: before each test, there's a brief description with an outline of the topics tested and several sample questions of each question type for the specific subject. For the writing test, there is a sample topic and 6 essays with the 6 different scores on that topic (this topic is NOT the one on the REAL test--so you get 2 topics in the book for practice!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Good investement, August 14, 1999
By A Customer
This is not the book you should use until your final review session.

For practicing purpose try to use a reviewing material that covers your topics specifically since Real SAT II has only one exam for every topic.

But later on this book will be very useful for you to have a good feel of that the _real_ exams are like. Then you can iron out whatever weak spots you have.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, But Probably Not Worth Buying..., December 7, 2004
By Stephen J. Carlson (Overland Park, Kansas United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I used this book to help me out for my SAT II tests for Writing, Physics, and Math Level IIc. The practice tests in this book are actual SAT II tests used in previous years. I found the difficulty level and types of questions in this book to be very close to the actual test. This was a good thing because I used practice tests in other books that were much more difficult than the real thing as well as online tests that were much too easy.

However, I must warn you, it probably will not be worth your money to actually purchase this book. The tests are excellent but there is only ONE TEST for each subject so it may not be worth buying, especially if you only are taking one or two tests. Also I should note that the answers are given but there are no explanations.

You are better off trying to borrow this book from your library or school. It may be wiser to buy a subject-specific book for each individual test you are taking, although for some of the less-taken tests this may be the only help you can find.

This is a great book. It is a wonderful creation and is great for test prep. Though it only contains one real SAT II per subject, it is very accurate.
