Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Dismissing critics of the Bush Administration’s approach to the war on terror, this hawkish manifesto calls for more of the same. The authors, both retired generals and Fox News pundits, allow that terrorism involves a worldwide network of Muslim radicals aiming at a global Islamic empire and possibly plotting nuclear attacks on American cities. But they insist that the spread of terrorism will not be stanched through "the law-enforcement paradigm of counterterrorism" or the settlement of Middle East political crises, but by going after the state sponsors (including Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and North Korea) that the authors identify as being part of the "Web of Terror." The authors nod to soft measures—encouraging democratization and public diplomacy initiatives—to foster moderation in the Muslim world, but the heart of their agenda is regime change. As the authors would have it, North Korea must dismantle its nuclear program or face U.S. invasion. Syria, unless it stops supporting terrorism and coughs up the Iraqi WMDs the authors say it’s hiding, should also be invaded. Saudi Arabia should be nudged toward a diversified economy and political reform, but if Islamic radicals take over, it too must be invaded. Iran, too big to invade, should be slapped with an embargo and naval blockade, while Pakistan should be enticed with aid packages into curbing its nuclear proliferation and cracking down on the Taliban and al-Qaeda. The authors’ ambitious schedule of ultimatums and conquests leads them to focus almost exclusively on the U.S. military, for which they recommend the Rumsfeld doctrine of light, mobile forces, supplemented by additional weapons spending. Homeland security gets scant attention beyond vague proposals for a Terrorist Security Department and Special Terrorist Courts involving substantial infringements on due process. With little analysis of costs and feasibility and not enough attention to homeland security, the authors’ blueprint may not satisfy those who don’t already support the ready use of U.S. military might. Product Description
This book will break news and dramatically challenge assumptions about what the American military can achieve with high-tech weaponry--even more that it did in Iraq--and what must be done-- more than people think--if the War on Terror is to be won.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Sober Analysis, April 12, 2004
By F. Kalesnik (Middletown, New York United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Generals McInerney and Vallely have consistently impressed me with their sober, professional analysis of the Wars on Terror and in Iraq. Unlike the "chicken littles" proclaiming "Quagmire" at the first sign of trouble, they showed the disciplined restraint one expects from seasoned soldiers (as a twentytwo year Marine Corps veteran, I know the last thing the troops need to see is a general panicking; as a professional historian, I know that what journalists say should be taken with a large dose of skepticism). This book provides informed insights into the past, present, and possible future of our struggle against militant Islam. Engagingly written, it will entertain as well as enlighten.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading, April 15, 2004
By J Rivard (Cincinnati, OH, USA) - See all my reviews
The Forward by Col. North quickly and accurately recaps events leading up to the real crisis we face today and why America and it's Allies have become polerized on the global terrorist threat. Next, out of the blizzard of information and disinformation coming at us through all media outlets, Generals McInerney and Vallely piece together the vital details necessary for understanding the life and death issues now facing America and the free world. But the Generals don't simply give you the bad news, they systematically lay out real world options, and in some cases, the only sane course of action, for (literally) saving America and our allies from unimaginable death and destruction. Before I read Endgame, I was already convinced the next attack upon America's homeland was not far off. I now realize I was being optimistic. Endgame is not the work of alarmists or retired military men out to make a quick buck from current events. These are American Patriots that have spent their entire careers protecting America and continue to do so by providing information essential to our understanding and acting upon the risks we truly face.

5.0 out of 5 stars Endgame: The Blueprint for Victory in the War on Terror, April 7, 2004
By A Customer
Excellent writing in explaining the Web of Terror. Very timely in what is occuring in Global Terrorism. A book that should be read by American people and Government officials. It is the first book that I have seen that lays out a strategy to win the War on Terror.
