Editorial Reviews

Review

Be careful. These poems can be wonderfully dangerous: jumpy, radiant. -- Marianne Boruch

If you love poetry you can see, smell, taste, hear, and feel, then you will love this collection. -- Barbara Hamby

Product Description

Heather Sellers' first book of poems creates what poet Barbara Hamby calls "serious voodoo" around the worlds of adolescence and young womanhood. Brenda Hillman, judge for the Sawtooth Poetry Prize (for which this book was a runner-up) wrote, "Her Florida is an intense, extra-surreal lining to the dream Wallace Stevens had of it.... Her free-verse line argues with its freedoms, a jaggedness as agitated as a coast that is loved and feared."

4.0 out of 5 stars sparkling and radiant poems!, February 23, 2006
In Drinking Girls and Their Dresses, Heather Sellers paints underwater, in the sky, and among the grass blades in her past and present. Her words are infectious and taunting, I can't get most of them out of my head and all the one-liners I remember, even though they are from different poems, meld to form one great idea. I love how Sellers starts out, "We are frantic families here. We are all bitten up." It just makes you trapped in her sweaty, salty world but you don your sunglasses and float along. Sellers' lines are limitless in their capacity to engulf the reader. One of my favorites is "Ocean Pacific" with its easy ebbs and flows, like the gulf coast, and its hazy theme of endless summer and her admiration for her brother: "Mostly bending what couldn't be bent. Sand, sea, the big bed of ocean./ My brother lived to slide and fall and loop. He never wore a leash." Sellers has a way of incorporating her life into her poetry with breezy, simple, but poignant images- be they smell, taste, or sight, all of which leave you hankering for more, please: "I ate salmon later, and drank/ beer with some mussels and/ when I left Poltonhall I was/ thinking of Toad Hall and that's/ how I got to the frogs."
If you are looking for poetry that is aromatic, savory, and entertaining, look no further. The thoroughly enjoyable Drinking Girls and Their Dresses will keep your attention for much longer than it will take to read it.
