From Library Journal
This collection of articles published in the Village Voice and the Texas Observer range in subject from the lives of women servants in El Paso to the Immigration and Naturalization Service hearings of leftist writer Margaret Randall to the nationwide hysteria over the sexual abuse of children. Nathan's narratives of life on the border ring true and are the best part of the book; her stories of illegal immigrants and their experiences in the United States are especially moving. Readers may find provocative her Pulitzer Prize- nominated analysis of what she terms "the ritual sexual abuse hoax." The various articles come together fairly well and include some fine examples of journalistic feature writing. Recommended.
