Editorial Reviews

Review

Gerrit Voogt's Constraint on Trial is now the best biography in any language... -- James D. Tracy --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Description

This book is a thorough examination of the life and thought of Dirck Volckertsz Coornhert (1522-90), the Dutch notary, artist, poet, playwright, translator, and controversialist who defended freedom of conscience and toleration. Coornhert's individualism made him eschew any restrictions on personal religious choice. His spiritualist beliefs are revealed in his writings on toleration and show him as a man who saw himself as 'God's battering ram against the prison of men's conscience'.

5.0 out of 5 stars He dared to defend the values of tolerance and freedom, July 12, 2002
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Constraint on Trial: Dirk Volckertsz Coornhert and Religious Freedom (Sixteenth Century Essays & Studies, 52) (Paperback)
The 52nd volume of the Truman State University Press "Sixteenth Century Essays and Studies" series, Constraint On Trial: Dirck Volckertsz Coornhert And Religious Freedom by Gerrit Voogt (Kennesaw state University, Kennesaw, Georgia) is the close study of Dirck Volckertsz Coornhert (1522-90), an individualist poet, playwright, translator, and controversial figure who dared to defend the values of tolerance and freedom of conscience. Examining his "Synod on the Freedom of Conscience", the "Trial of the Killing of Heretics", and many, many other works, Coornhert's ideas, impact and legacy are scrutinized in this fascinating volume. Constraint On Trial is a strongly recommended contribution to Sixteenth-Century Studies supplemental reading lists, as well as university level academic European history, culture, philosophy, and religious reference collections.
