Review

"Thank you for the fine book and congratulations for the good work you have done in preserving part of a great heritage." (Sadhaka Jothinatha - Hinduism Today) "We are very impressed with the research that must have been involved. This is a very important book for the documentation Indian culture." -- Sukulina Devi Das, Sanskrit Religions Institute

Product Description

This book is a manual to learn how to wrap (drape) 100 sari styles and other unstitched clothing of India (dhoti, mekhla, veshti). It has 700 illustrations showing step-by-step how to produce these costumes from the flat piece of cloth. Many of these styles are about to be forgotten and this book will soon be the only way to learn some traditional sari wrapping techniques. The book also has an introduction to basic draping techniques and a chapter on the history and evolution of Indian unstitched clothes, as well as some explanations about the social implications of clothing in India.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, April 10, 2000
I have had this book for about a year and I just started to try some of the drapes recently and let me tell you something they are SO beautiful. I never imagined that there were so many variations on the sari. There are over 100 in the book and many of them can be reinterpreted to design some of your own. I only gave the book four stars because some of the pictures are unclear. They are all hand drawn by the author. The written instructions are pretty clear and complete so with practice most of the drapes can be perfectly done even if the picture don't help. I suggest that you use this book like a text book. Write notes on it if you have to, mark the pages that you like as well. Now if only the author would write a second book!

Chantal's years of study in India have resulted in this unique book on Indian clothing for both men and women. It will go a long way toward preserving the art of dressing in unstiched clothing. Arumugaswami Managing Editor Hinduism Today

5.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL BOOK ON HOW TO DRAPE SARIS!, February 18, 2008
By Gauri-Pahari Das "Pahari" (Glendale, AZ) - See all my reviews

But ya know what? You are being screwed over if you buy this book at these sellrs prices of 50 plus dollars. The book was originally 15.95 in USD ON THE BACK OF THE BOOK, and because the author is deceased, there are these sellers on here trying to make a buck...I have tried to reason withone of them and they straight up lied and said the backof the book is 30 dollars..no it isnt. I have the book! Im outraged!

please try and find this cheaper elsewhere...it is not a 50 dollar book. I paid 11.95 for it from a seller. try somewhere else but u must must must have it over 100 ways to wear a sari

I am saddened at the sellrs who are "raping" customers, and as you can see the book is not selling! Why? It is not worth 50 bucks and is eaily obtainable from other sites. I cant list them becuz of amazons policy, but just look around, youll find one for 30 or cheaper.

It is a lovely book. The author spent a long time in India travelling thru many many villages, and learning how to drape different styles. Its a masterpeice. She would be saddened to see how these sellers are charging so much for a b/w illustrated spiral-bound line-drawing book of her work. Or she would have made it more expensive when she published it!
DO NOT PURCHASE THIS AT THESE RIDICULOUS PRICES! What a disgrac you are you nasty sellers!
Wait for a GOOD seller to sell it to you at a REASONABLE price.
Thank you
Pahari
