About the Author

Mitch Albom is the author of nine books. His first novel, The Five People You Meet in Heaven , is the most successful U.S. hardback first novel ever and has to date sold over 8 million copies worldwide. Tuesdays With Morrie, (1997) his chronicle of time spent with a beloved but dying college professor, spent four years on the New York Times bestseller list and is now the most successful memoir ever published. Both books were eventually turned into celebrated TV films. The critically acclaimed Five People You Meet in Heaven aired on ABC in winter, 2004. Oprah Winfrey produced the film version of Tuesdays With Morrie in December 1999; starring Jack Lemmon and Hank Azaria. The film garnered four Emmy awards, including best TV film, director, actor and supporting actor. An award-winning journalist and radio host, Albom wrote the screenplay for The Five People You Meet in Heaven, and is an established playwright, having authored numerous pieces for the theater, including the off-Broadway version of Tuesdays With Morrie (co-written with Jeffrey Hatcher) which has seen more than 40 productions nationwide, and several recent comedies which have been produced and performed in venues across the country. Albom has founded three charities in the metropolitan Detroit area: "The Dream Fund," established in 1989, allows disadvantaged children to become involved with the arts. "A Time To Help," founded in 1998, brings volunteers together once a month to tackle various projects in Detroit, including staffing shelters, building homes with Habitat for Humanity, and operating meals on wheels programs for the elderly. “S.A.Y Detroit,” Albom’s most recent effort, is an umbrella program to fund shelters and care for the homeless in his city. He also raises money for literacy projects through a variety of means including his performances with The Rock Bottom Remainders, a band made up of writers which includes Steven King, Dave Barry, Scott Turrow, Amy Tan and Ridley Pearson. Albom serves on the boards of various charities and, in 1999, was named National Hospice Organization's Man of the Year. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

From AudioFile

Author Mitch Albom brings Eddie, a war veteran who died in an accident, back to life. As Eddie arrives in heaven, he meets five people who, at some time, directly or indirectly influenced his life. They each try to help him understand his apparently meaningless existence. Flashbacks reveal every birthday in Eddie's life, awakening his interest and motivating him to hear more. In spite of the few changes or nuances in Francisco Rivela's voice, it is still possible to differentiate among the various personalities and discern their individual characteristics. Rivela's firm style provides all the necessary emotions and sentiments. A few musical moments create a peaceful, heavenly atmosphere. 4.0 out of 5 stars THE TAPESTRY OF ;LIFE..., June 21, 2006
By Lawyeraau (Balmoral Castle) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (COMMUNITY FORUM 04)
Written in clear, spare prose, this slender tome is a pleasant little book that can easily be read in one sitting. It is a sentimental look at life and the hereafter. This book, the Spanish text edition of "The Five People You Meet in Heaven", focuses on an individual named Eddie, who is the chief maintenance mechanic for the rides at a seaside amusement park called Ruby Pier. It is around him that the book revolves. Eddie is a somewhat embittered and lonely old man who tragically dies on his eighty third birthday, while trying to save a child from certain death when an amusement ride comes loose from its moorings.

When he dies, Eddie meets five people in heaven. Each of them imparts a special lesson about Eddie's life. Each lesson allows him to understand the meaning of his life a little better. The five people that he meets show Eddie, and the reader, how we are all connected, and that the smallest acts can often have great impact on others, both positively and negatively. The book's bottom line message is that everyone has a purpose in life, whether or not it is readily apparent to one. It is as if there were a cosmic tapestry, with the life of one interwoven with the life of another, the threads crossing unknowingly but creating a larger picture.

Although the author definitely manipulates the sensibilities of the reader, that is not necessarily a bad thing. The book, however, is somewhat predictable and, at times, a little reminiscent of a treacly Hallmark greeting card, both schmaltzy and touching. It was no surprise that the book ended up as a Hallmark Hall of Fame production and turned into a made-for-TV movie. The film is quite enjoyable, and Jon Voight is terrific in the lead role. I actually saw the film before I read the book, and the film whetted my appetite for the book. While not as good as the author's other book, "Tuesdays with Morrie", it is still a book that will resonate, if only because many will find its simple message comforting. Profundity, after all, may be found in simplicity.

2.0 out of 5 stars Muy mala traduccion / Very poor Translation, October 26, 2008
By Katuka (Round Rock, TX) - See all my reviews
I borrowed this book from the library in Spanish since they didn't have the original English version available. Although I liked the story (is good, not great), the translation was very poor, many parragraphs throughout the book had to be read by context, since the words didn't make sense by themselves. It almost seemed as if they had used a translation software program to do the work for them.
