Product Description
Spring, 1968. A time of turmoil in the United States and throughout the world. John Pedersen, son of a tyrannical American diplomat, is stuck in apartheid South Africa. In secret defiance of apartheid and his father’s orders, John strikes up a forbidden friendship with the family’s black servant, Solomon. Through Solomon, John learns the language and plight of the Zulu people. He sees how apartheid destroys a society and how his own father’s racism and fanaticism are destroying the family. He realizes the behavior is based on fear and that, as Solomon says, “the fear is killing us all.” But will John face his own fear and stand up to his father? Can he protect his younger brother and sister and—literally—stand in the line of fire to save Solomon? Is he brave enough to deserve the nickname Ibhubesi, Lion, and choose his own path . . . freedom?

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving and intense, March 14, 2004
By Francesca "Francesca" (Hyattsville, MD USA) - See all my reviews
This coming of age book focuses on a young American boy who faces anger and pain at home and in the outside world. Set in South Africa during the days of apartheid, it's a gripping tale of a boy's journey to manhood. The book has excitement enough to engage a young reader, yet it tells a story that will make the reader think about love, justice and hope. I recommend it for any mature young reader, and as a discussion book for families to read together.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tale for Everyone, April 1, 2004
By Moira Rose Donohue "Moira" (Falls Church, VA United States) - See all my reviews
Wow, what a fabulous journey! Ibhubesi is a tale of an adolescent diplomat's son, John, on the verge of manhood in South Africa while it is under apartheid rule. John learns about the evils of apartheid through the eyes of an educated servant and then through some shocking events he himself witnesses. This book is an exciting read and a wonderful social consciousness raiser. It is perfect for kids in middle school and above, and is really a must-read for adults as well. The characters are memorable, and some of the scenes, like the one with the dog, are gripping and absolutely unforgettable.
