Editorial Reviews

Review

"Finding the Courage to Speak is a brave, well-written book that addresses a wide range of complex topics in a clear, knowledgeable way--including the experience of dissociation, traumatic memory, and the impact of trauma on physical health. Speaking out about abuse continues to be a crucial part of healing--and of working toward a world where abuse no longer damages the lives of children. Paige Alisen's book is a worthwhile contribution to this endeavor." (Ellen Bass, coauthor of The Courage to Heal: A Guide for Women Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse ) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

Haunted by their horrific pasts and suffering in silence, girls traumatized by severe child abuse often endure debilitating medical ailments and serious psychiatric problems well into adulthood. They withstand clinical depression, anorexia, sleep dysfunction, post-traumatic stress disorder, alcoholism, and one of the most extreme conditions—dissociative identity disorder (DID), the development of multiple personalities.

Paige Alisen, herself diagnosed with DID as a result of repeated sexual, ritual, and psychological abuse, skillfully blends her own painful experiences with the powerful testimonies of other survivors, to present a disturbing yet inspiring account of childhood trauma and its long-term consequences for women's mental and physical well-being. She also delivers a strong indictment against a society that permits and perpetuates the brutal treatment of women and children, and offers an informative, practical, and encouraging guide for survivors on the journey to healing and recovery.

Bringing together personal, psychiatric, social, and feminist perspectives, Alisen defines the different types of child abuse, describes why children remain silent about their ordeal, explores the ways in which they try to speak through their behaviors and their bodies, and examines how they develop extraordinarily complex and extreme strategies, including the creation of alter personalities, to cope with and survive the torment. She faults government, churches, schools, the health care system, and other institutions for their failure to adequately recognize and deal with the widespread problem of childhood trauma. Included in the volume are useful self-help resources and crucial advice for survivors and their support networks.

Alisen's innovative and courageous approach to a difficult subject will empower the countless women who bear the emotional and physical scars of severe childhood trauma. In addition, her compelling work will raise awareness about the devastating effects of child abuse and sound a call to those in key positions to advocate for and effect social change that will end the vicious cycle of abuse.

5.0 out of 5 stars A ground breaking, brave work!, October 31, 2003
By A Customer
Finding Courage to Speak by Dr. Paige Alisen is a ground breaking work bridging the fields of psychology, Women's Studies, social science, and "self help." The author writes with tremendous insight and with her own courage about an issue that envelopes our society and is, yet, rarely addressed so openly. Dr. Alisen's work will reach scholars, students, and practioners and is accessible to survivors of childhood abuse. Unlike other work on the issue of child abuse, Dr. Alisen examines the ways in which severe childhood trauma is dealt with by victims through dissociative identity disorder and multiple personality disorders. It contributes greatly to our understanding of the ways in which our society facilitates harms against women and children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courage to Speak is the Best, September 27, 2007
By Butterfly Warrior (San Diego, Ca) - See all my reviews
I have read MANY books on child abuse and on long term consequences such as PTSD in children and adults however the Courage to Speak is one of the BEST books I have ever read. I mean, I cannot express just how many books I have read on abuse.. even the Courage to heal which I did not like and found extremely triggering but I loved THis book so much that I'm writing my first review ever here. It was passionate, true, and just beautiful to not feel so alone in the horrible experience of being a 'survivor' of child abuse and also of having a best friend with DID who died as a result of it.. that is.. suicide of one of her parts... that is how I see it as Murder by her abusers .. murder of her mind and body that was repeatedly abused... and in my own lesser abuse, I have found it hard to find books that I could relate with. Most are either too extreme or too basic... and while this book has very severe cases, in those cases, I find myself. I just found myself here and even recently told my therapist about this book and how good it was for me.. how it spoke to me as a feminist, a scholar, a future therapist, a woman and a survivor of child abuse.
