Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Two politicians- one Republican, one Democrat- sound off on the issues of a campaign: rhetoric, leadership, the media. But this isn't a debate; it's Mean Business: The Insider's Guide to Winning Any Political Election by Matt Towery and Pierre Howard. Towery, a former Georgia congressman, and Howard, Georgia's former lieutenant governor, squared off for the office of lieutenant governor in 1990. Now they've put their differences aside and put their heads together to compile practical advice on how to win a campaign. Filled with anecdotes and interviews with political experts from both sides of the aisle, this book advocates a no-nonsense approach to politics that's all business, from creating a marketing plan to crafting a message. It offers valuable insight for both novice and veteran politicians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the budding political star., November 4, 2000
By Edward R Scimia Jr (Syracuse, NY) - See all my reviews
Whether you're looking to run for a spot on the local School board or just interested in what a candidate goes through to get elected, Mean Business is worth a read. It offers plenty of practical advice that can be applied to any election, and the "guest" authors such as Newt Gingrich and Dale Bumpers offer a lot of insight (and thankfully, they don't get into politics, just the campaign).

Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone who is interested in politics.

5.0 out of 5 stars A How-To Book with Edge, June 21, 2000
By A Customer
A how-to book with edge! If you've ever thought about becoming a politician, or just wondered why they act like that, this is the book for you. It's packed with helpful hints, real-life examples and touched with the sort of humor that will keep you reading for the sheer fun of it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected!, June 19, 2000
By A Customer
Having been personally involved in one of the author's political campaigns for quite a few years, I was disappointed with the content of the book. The comments regarding volunteers were very offensive and arrogant to me. I feel the book was very superficial as are most politicians. It would have been more enjoyable reading had they written more about their own personal experiences. They sold themselves short with this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful, Boring, and Wrong!
This book was simply awful. The author(s) are clearly more interested in their own ego (I was in the room when such and such happened) than in informing the reader. Read more
