Review

"Outwitting Stress: A Practical Guide to Conquering Stress Before Your Crack, released in February by The Lyons Press (softcover, 256 pages, $14.95), couldn't have come out at a better time."--The Topeka Capital-Journal

Product Description

It's a fact of modern-day life: No one lives without stress. In a whirlwind world of increasing work expectations, family obligations, financial strains, and chronic shortages of time, stressful situations seem to lurk at every turn. Dual-income families juggle time, children, and money in a never-ending high-wire act, and responsibilities for both young children and aging parents can put a tremendous strain on even the most calm and stable among us. Consider these statistics: This country's divorce rate is 49 percent; heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States; Americans spend $11.3 billion per year to cope with stress; 54 percent of adults are being treated for depression; job stress is estimated to cost U.S. industry $300 billion annually; more than nineteen million Americans ages eighteen to fifty-four have anxiety disorders.

Americans must learn to reduce the stress in their lives or learn to live with stress in productive ways-and Outwittng Stress will help you do just that. Creative ideas have been culled from experts in many fields, from CEOs, attorneys, and service-industry specialists, from parents and grandparents, athletes and marriage therapists, psychologists, coaches, bosses, clergy, and cops.

Chapters include "Identifying the Problem"; "Practical Ways to Outwit Stress"; "Stress in the Workplace"; "Stress, Sex, and Dating"; "Stressbusters for Marriage"; "Stress and Parenting"; "Stress and Finances"; "Outwitting Traffic and Other Nasty Forms of Commuter Stress"; "Outwitting Unexpected Delays"; "Outwitting Holiday Stress"; "Outwitting the Stress of Illness"; "How to Deal with Living in a Sometimes Ugly World"; and "Can Medicine Help?"

No one should be without this innovative, effective approach to outwitting stress. (6 x 9, 224 pages)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Reader-Friendly Resource Book, January 23, 2004
By Patty S Sullivan (Overland Park, Kansas United States) - See all my reviews
Outwitting Stress is a surprise read. I anticipated the typical how-to approach to relieving stress in my life. What I found was a delightful book that is as entertaining as it is informative. Rosenberg identifies daily stresses, lifestyle stresses, and many more we often don't recognize as factors that cause us to become frustrated, irritated or depressed. Her approaches to these situations are practical and easy to implement. She gives specific coping techniques that stick in the readers mind because of her descriptive talent to associate each situation with a memorable visual. Outwitting stress has enhanced my life and my perspective of how to create a calmer environment for daily living.
