Editorial Reviews

Product Description

In 1987, seasoned journalist Jerry Capeci was hired by the New York Daily News to cover the crime beat. His reporting on the Mafia proved so popular that he was given a weekly column, which was tagged "Jerry Capeci's Gangland."

"Gangland" was an immediate hit with New Yorkers and continued for almost seven years. Capeci wrote on the everyday trials and tribulations of La Cosa Nostra, putting the mob under a microscope and laying bare the inner workings and day-to-day operations of both mob bosses and low-level street soldiers alike. He reported on such major mob events as John Gotti's murder conviction and Sammy "the Bull"Gravano's testimony that put Gotti behind bars.

About the Author

Jerry Capeci has been covering the organized crime beat in New York City since 1975. As a crime reporter for the New York Post and later the New York Daily News, he has personally received death threats, one from a member of the late John Gotti's crew. He is currently the director of public relations at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. His "Gangland" column also appears weekly in the New York Sun, a daily newspaper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tales of the Real Life Sopranos, April 2, 2004
By Edward Garea "Edward Garea" (Branchville, New Jersey United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
New York City has always been notorious as one of the capitals of Organized Crime (Chicago is the other). And those of us who follow the doings of the Mob have been fortunate over the years to read Jerry Capeci's "Gangland" columns in the New York Daily News. Capeci encapulated the doings of the Five Families each week in a column written with a panache and style rarely seen these days. His column was so incisive that John Gotti reputedly considered issuing a contract on him.

Those who were not fortunate enough to read Capeci's columns when they originally ran can now rejoice with the publication of "Jerry Capeci's Gangland," a compilation of his columns over the years. This is more than just plain good writing; it is living history, a chronicle of the times when infighting coincided with RICO indictments to diminish the power and glory of New York's Five Families.

Compelling from beginning to end, this is a book any interested reader should have on his or her shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars BADA BING, December 5, 2003
By A Customer
It reads like Shakespeare with marinara sauce. Better than a Sopranos episode and more filling than a dinner at Umbertos. I just love to read the real life soap opera that is today's mob. A++++ Jerry. You really know these goombas and all their foibles. I loved this book and the pictures along with it. A must read for all mob fans.

2.0 out of 5 stars A bunch of very short mob stories
This book is a quick read, thanks in part to the larger than average type. It has a gossipy tone, and at least half the book is about John Gotti and his son Junior. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars FORGETABOUTIT.
Capeci just has too big an ego. there are plenty of great mob books out there, this isn't one of them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting at times boring at others.
Sometimes it is interesting but then gets boring. Not enough detail into cases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Capeci, the name says it all.
Another excellent take, by the unmatched name in the "business" -- one of the few authors dealing with the mob who consistently delivers good books.
