Product Description

Analysis of Shaolin Chin Na

'Chin Na' (Qin Na) means 'Seize and Control'. This ancient Shaolin grappling art is the study of controlling an opponent through joint locks and acupuncture cavities. Chin Na is part of almost all Chinese martial styles, and it can be a valuable addition to any other martial system.

This video is the first in Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming's extensive Chin Na video series, and provides an excellent overview to the art of Chin Na, beginning with the essential Fundamental Chin Na Speed and Power Training Routines.

Dr. Yang and senior student Ramel Rones demonstrate over 80 Chin Na techniques close up, in slow motion and at regular speed, showing subtle variations for these effective techniques, which are introduced in the following categories: Finger, Wrist, Elbow, Shoulder, Neck, Waist, Leg and Takedowns.

Chin Na is the root of more modern grappling arts and is often trained by military, security and law-enforcement personnel worldwide.

This video complements the book Analysis of Shaolin Chin Na - Instructor's Manual for All Martial Styles, by Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming.

• Learn to control an opponent with a turn of the wrist.
• Chin Na is easily integrated with any martial style.
• 80 Chin Na techniques are clearly demonstrated.
• Learn fundamental Chin Na Speed and Power Training.

70 Minutes

Performed by Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming and Ramel Rones

(From here, move on to the Comprehensive Applications of Shaolin Chin Na 1 and 2 videos. With demonstrations of nearly 200 applications on each video of Chin Na against all kinds of attacks, as well as some offensive Chin Na, this is a encyclopedic reference you will go back repeatedly to during your training.

Then, move on to the Chin Na In Depth Courses 1-12 video series, with detailed explanation of each Chin Na technique and personal instruction from Master Yang in a classroom setting.)

Easy to follow along with a huge variety of locks. Coupled with the book, it makes an indispensible resource. Kudos to Yang Jwing Ming for putting out another quality product.

5.0 out of 5 stars The foundation for all further grappling study, January 20, 2004
By A Customer
This is the first video in a comprehensive Chin Na video series by the renowned master of Chinese martial arts, Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming. The video first instructs essential power and speed training, and gives the basic concept of Chin Na, which means 'Sieze and Control' in Chinese. This is followed by demonstration of over 80 Chin Na techniques by Master Yang performed on one of his disciples, Ramel Rones. The video was produced in the 1980's, and was a major force in introducing the subject of Shaolin Chin Na to the USA, long before grappling was a popular trend. The demonstration is at slow and regular speed, and shows subtle variations for these effective techniques. Master Yang did not speak in these early videos due to his difficult 'Chinglish' accent, but the teaching is clear and concise.

Thank you to Master Yang for cataloging these ancient techniques that have nearly been lost, even in China, and which are the root of the more modern arts of aikido, and more recently, hapkido.

From here, move onto the Comprehensive Applications of Shaolin Chin Na 1 and 2 videos. With demonstrations of nearly 200 applications on each video of Chin Na against all kinds of attacks, as well as some offensive Chin Na, this is a encyclopedic reference you will refer back to during your training.

For deeper, personal instruction, you can delve into the Chin Na In Depth 12 Volume video series, in which Master Yang instructs over 100 Chin Na techniques. In this series, which was filmed more recently, you can see that his ability to teach has developed greatly during his worldwide seminar tours, and his English instruction is flawless. He shows each technique multiple times, and with several variations, and often allows students to demonstrate, in order to show corrections and fine tuning for common mistakes.

Through all of this vast training, it is vital to refer back to 'The Analysis of Shaolin Chin Na' video, which gives an excellent overview of the art of Chin Na, and instructs the essential fundamental training that is the key to effective and quick Chin Na.

Much respect for Dr. Yang for this exhaustive research and teaching!

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless, September 5, 2003
By A Customer
Slow, Up Close, Normal Speed... no narration by the instructor, bad camerawork, and pretty much all ended up on his In Depth 1-12 DVD's for insane prices.

My opinion of this VHS and his "In Depth DVD's"...
1. Maybe 75 realistic techniques.
2. You're stuck watching 2 students fumble around in 5-12 and then watch the instructor correct them, even sometimes contradicting HIMSELF...
3. Compared to 1-4, somehow this material (5-8 & 9-12) seems it was filmed several YEARS prior to 1-4. 1-4 was pretty good, but did they lose the original footage? The students look haggard in faded uniforms in these, yet in 1-4 they're all wearing brand new uniforms, all clean cut, from different parts of the world, Italy, Ireland ect. and Dr. Yang's english is much better. Also 1-4 shows straight techniques versus wasting time watching students fumble around ect.
...
