5.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary Jewish life with a dash of magic realism, July 9, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
"No tan distinto" means not so different from here, "here" being earthly life which is contrasted with a heavenlike realm where the widowed protagonist's spouse resides. Heaven, it seems, is subject to the ups and downs of everyday existence. The protagonist is a secular Argentine Jew who embarks on a spiritual quest of sorts that brings him into contact with coreligionists ranging from Orthodox followers in Israel to a picaresque and magical rabbi in Cuba. Birmajer is an understated writer with a droll sense of humor.
