5.0 out of 5 stars a classic of the early 80's sound (plus No Tears!), January 11, 1999
By A Customer
When I came upon a new compilation put out by Rhino, where "Incubus" was listed along with songs by bands like Ultravox and Magazine, it prompted me to pull out Desire. Recorded in England in 1981, it began a new cycle for Tuxedomoon, previously of the San Francisco punk/new wave/art music scene. Desire combines danceable, literate songs with atmospheric pieces; electronic keyboards, sax, strings, and "sounds" over drum machines and throbbing bass lines. This cd also contains the ep "No Tears," which was a punk/dance anthem from the late 70's. When I see that Depeche Mode (!) have a tribute album, I can only imagine the same for this disc: Stereolab doing "Jinx," Tortoise playing "East," Combustible Edison on "Holiday for Plywood" . . . the Offspring, of course, on "No Tears" . . .hey, Fatboy Slim doing "Desire" . . . whoa, stop me now. . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Darker than you expect..., August 15, 2000
By "pissadakis" (Khania, Greece) - See all my reviews
You rather believe that you have heard music that can trap you in a dark room of mystery, until you listen Tuxedomoon's "Desire". It is no sign of prediction, or conformation in this album of Tuxedomoon. Melodies that capture the mind and the soul, poems rather than lyrics, unexpected music passages. Most people may characterise Tuxedomoon underground experimentalists but the characterisation that rather fits to them is essentialists. It is an utopia to combine electronic sounds and clarinet to built a track such as "East"; it is dangerous to play with the phonetics and sign "Jinx"; it is risky to compose music on the lyrics of the "Victims of the dance". Best tracks? Hard to say. I would suggest, "East" for the magic playing of Steve Brown, "Jinx" for the repeatable phonetics, "Incubus" for the mysterious description, "Nite and Day" for the excellent violin. If you search for music to stimulate your fantasy, this cd is the best that you can get.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece, January 8, 2002
Extraordinary electronic album that sounds like it's made by a bunch of morose Europeans who thought it might be a jolly wheeze to record in Berlin because Bowie did it. Surprise then, to learn that they in fact hail from the States (Frisco? I forget). The Tux never recorded an ordinary song. Kraftwerk influence here but playfully. Genius.
