5.0 out of 5 stars Straightforward & easy to follow, January 9, 2005

(REAL NAME)
I borrowed this tape and have been using to help a friend with limited flexibility in his hips and ankles learn Tai Chi, and it has worked very well. While he cannot do some of the movements "correctly", we were able to find ways for him to do the full set of forms comfortably with only minor modifications to foot placement.

The forms are broken down into very small pieces. Each time the instructor, Dr. Lam, runs through the whole movement from the beginning, adding only one more small movement. The tape repeats each additional movement four times: with Dr. Lam, with his assistant Ian, with Ian leading a group of four students, and again with Dr. Lam. It gives you the opportunity to see the movement from different angles and done by people of different skill levels. He emphasizes the importance of looking the correct direction while doing the forms (not at the TV screen!) and in moving gently and gracefully, within your comfortable range of motion.

The sequence of six forms is taught in six lessons, though not one lesson per form, as some are longer and more complex than others. Each starts with some very simple warmup movements and then a review of the forms up to this point. Each lesson ends with a explanation and correction of a common mistake in that piece and encouragement to practice regularly. The tape ends with a demonstration by Dr. Lam of the full set of 6 forms, shown from both the front and back, and finishes with a demonstration of a simple set of three Qi Gong movements.

I look forward to getting one of Dr. Lam's other tapes to learn more.

The only possible complaint is that Dr. Lam's accent is very thick. "Playing the Flute" becomes "Praying zha Root", "Left Hand" becomes "Reft Hang", and so on. It didn't get in the way of my understanding of the forms, but I did catch myself directing my friend to lift his right "hang" on a few occasions.
