For patients with hypertension, home monitoring can help detect dangerous blood-pressure spikes before they cause problems. Tracking blood pressure over time also gives a better overall picture of health than a single reading at a hospital or clinic, where nervousness can often distort results. The easier the measurement process, the easier it is to commit to this small daily routine--and there's no simpler model to use than a finger blood-pressure monitor, especially if you need to take the readings yourself. There's no messing around with bulbs or gauges or bulky arm cuffs--you don't even need to roll up your shirt sleeves. Simply insert an index finger and adjust the positioning slide to make it fit snugly, then press the start button to make the finger cuff automatically inflate. (Those with very small fingers--less than 2 inches in diameter--might have difficulty making the finger cuff fit tightly enough.) The monitor then calculates blood pressure and pulse rate for you, alternating blood pressure and pulse readouts in large, easy-to-read numbers on the digital display. It even shuts off automatically after use, to save those AAA batteries. The only downside: finger blood-pressure monitors are more sensitive than other models to variables like position and temperature. It's not a bad idea to back up your own readings with regular visits to your doctor's office, and be sure to check your monitor's accuracy while you're there.
