Editorial Reviews

Product Description
This is Ledisi's second project and it is described as a modern blend of Classic Jazz and Neo-Soul.

Features such artists as:Pete Escovedo(Concord Records), The Braxton Brothers (Peak Records) and also pianist and creator of "The Jazz Piano Theory Book," Mark Levine.

But do not think it's all jazz because it's not. This album features D'Angelo's Brown Sugar blended with Stanley Turrentine's Sugar. That song alone gives you the vibe of this album.

For those who love Sarah Vaughn, Duke Ellington, Jill Scott and D'Angelo will enjoy the way Ledisi and her co-producer Sundra "Sun" Manning created new classic jazz songs and put a modern touch to the standards to fit the young and old listeners.

This album satisfies both R&B fans as well as breathing life into the music of jazz. Feeling Orange But sometimes Blue is a innovative refreshing album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ledisi does it AGAIN...Just GO GET this CD!, January 20, 2002
By Debra S. Walker (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
First of all, I bought "Soulsinger" late last year, and was awestruck by what I heard. Then, last October, I seized the opportunity to experience Ledisi, Sun(dra), and the band, live and in-person, here in Chicago. And, as I said in a previous posting, that experience was amazing! At that point, I was SOLD on Ledisi, et. al.!

On this "sophomore" release - "Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue" - Ledisi, Sun(dra) and Anibade (the band)really prove to ME that they are destined to be STARS! Personally, I have a particular fondness for straight-up jazz (and not that "smooth jazz" stuff that's being force-fed to the public on commercial radio...), as well as anyone (male or female)who can "sing jazz" well, too, as vocalists. Well, on this release, Ledisi showed ME that she IS a real jazz singer, and MORE!

In my opinion, on "Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue", Ledisi, et. al., effectively interpret (and breathe new life into...)such classic jazz standards as "Round Midnight", "Straight No Chaser", "In a Sentimental Mood", and "Autumn Leaves" (with an alternative take of this song on the "hidden cut" on this CD...). And, then, there are the "killer" original interpretations ("Sugar/Brown Sugar"-a big favorite of mine...) and/or new tunes, i.e., "Meeting Marcus on A Thursday" and the title cut (two other big favorites of mine, from this release...)!

Let me tell y'all: I haven't found ANY weak cuts on this release. To me, it's ALL good, and one can see progression with regards to Ledisi and her musical talents, as well as her band, in recordings on this second CD. I look forward to the next release from Ledisi this year - a live album (or so I hear) - as well as my next opportunity to see her, Sun, and the band, here in Chicago <g> Ledisi is ALL that, and MORE, believe me! Plus, she, Sun, and Anibade (the band) are best experienced LIVE. If they come to YOUR town, I suggest that you make it your business to BE THERE, if you can...

Later...

5.0 out of 5 stars There are no words to describe.....the tour de force, April 10, 2002
By Eddie Johnson Jr. (New York, New York) - See all my reviews
I am a Ledisi addict. I proudly own "Soul Singer" and I missed the group when they were in New York City because of the WTC tragedy. Let me say, there are no adjectives that can descibe "Ledisi". You really have to see a performance, buy the cd's and experience them for yourself. I wrote a reveiw for the "Soul Singer" and I am still as excited about "Soul Singer" as am I about "Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue". I honestly can not pick a favorite song but I am heavily leaning on number 7 with its' latin/soul/jazz groove in collaboration with Shelia E. daddy in his own right. But then ya gotta luv "Brown Sugar", "Straight No Chaser" which would make Ella proud", "In a Sentimental Mood", "If You Go", "Autumn Leaves" of course "Land of Free". I plead with "Ledisi" do not go commercial. I know the suits are going to make you compromise and the "Tour de Force" will loose its' magic. After the suits get involved the new album title will be "Things Fall Apart". I have great respect and admiration for ya' stay strong, creative and true to heart. From your number one fan!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Jazzy Follow Up.........great Jazz/Soul, February 5, 2002
I'm a big fan of her last release "Soulsinger". Played it often enough to know all the words to the best tracks. This release takes you into the relm of a jazz singer. Ledisi proved her jazz/vocal talents on her last release and this one gives you the full picture of her jazz roots. She brought along a great band to back up her beautiful voice and this one really takes you into the jazz club scene. Close your eyes and imagine yourself in one of your favorite jazz club and her voice controls the vibe in the entire place........yeah, it's that nice! You've got to be a fan of real jazz to really appriciate what this CD offers. Ledisi stands out from the other soul artist to arrive in this game. Not as soulful as the last but the soul is replaced with pure jazz vocal bliss........

Ledisi, babygirl...... I'm pleased
