Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Although the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City takes place in the 1980s, its musical accompaniment leaps light years beyond the simplistic plink-plonking found on that decade's primitive gaming systems. GTA's whopping seven-CD soundtrack set (also available as individual volumes) culls the best of the decade of decadence's musical offerings. V-Rock, and Wave 103 spotlight the '80s musical mainstays, hairsprayed heavy metal and bursts of fizzy New Wave electro-pop, while saccharine love songs and mellow light rock populate the next two discs: Emotion 98.3 and Flash FM, respectively.

Volume 5, the appropriately titled Wildstyle Pirate, celebrates the origins of hip-hop and DJ culture; Fever 105 focuses on sizzling soul; and Radio Espantoso rounds out the set with upbeat Cuban jazz hybrids. With such differing styles, not every disc will appeal to every listener. And not every CD is mixed well--Fever 105 can be monotonous, and Emotion 98.3's tunes are overplayed. However, the best part about GTA is its often surprising musical selections: Tears for Fears' morose "Pale Shelter," the long mix of Grandmaster Flash's "The Message," and Mary Jane Girls' slinky "All Night Long." Throwing in lesser-known musical gems among the hits adds spice and unexpected turns, which redeem GTA's shortcomings and make this set a treat for everyone, not just fans of the game. --Annie Zaleski

4.0 out of 5 stars Could have had more but still a good value, August 6, 2003
By Donald Sullivan (Broadview Heights, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
Every thing on this set is great except for the missing tracks. I'll explain everything that is omitted, for your information. The following songs are not included (at least on the version I bought):

from Wildstyle, "Get It Girl" by 2 Live Crew, "The Smurf" by Tyrone Brunson. From Flash, "Japanese Boy" by Aneka, "Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Buggles, "One Thing Leads To Another" by The Fixx. From Fever 105, "Last Night A D.J. Saved My Life" by In Deep. From VRock, "Cum On Feel The Noise" by Quiet Riot, "She Sells Sanctuary" by The Cult, "Working For The Weekend" by Loverboy, "God Bless Video" by Alcatrazz, "Fist Fury" by Lovefist. From Espantoso, "The Bullís Wrong" by Alpha Banditos, "Yo Te Mire" by Tres Apenas Como Eso. From Wave 103, "Love Missle F1-11" by Sigue Sigue Sputnik, "Cars" by Gary Numan, "Poison Arrow" by ABC, "Obsession" by Animotion. Some sections of songs have also been removed, like the ones in "Self Control" by Laura Branigan and "I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls. The stations K-Chat and Vice City: Pressing Issues have also been excluded, but I personally don't feel they are necessary for the soundtrack.

Otherwise this disc set is excellent, with the commercials, and the announcers in character, acting as if they are albums of greatest hits from their stations.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing value, June 10, 2003
By Brian Stuart (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Anyone disillusioned with the greed and exploitation of the music industry can take some solice in this fantastic box set. Seven great CDs for an even better price. Believe me, this is the definition of worth the money. With beautiful packaging and neat little extras to boot!

Yes, some will complain about the tracks left off the soundtrack. Some omissions are so glaring, that one has to assume many were contractually motivated. No matter, though, as the soundtracks are still absurdly comprehensive and offer a great sampler of 80's music with a healthy mix of big hits and underappreciated tracks. "Four Little Diamonds" has quickly become a personal favorite, as has the awesome Romeo Void track "Never Say Never". The broad variety of the seven discs make this a great addition to any CD collection, even if you haven't played the game. From post-disco dance tracks, to the cool of Latin Jazz, to the calculated excess of pop and hard rock, to the morose stylings of New Wave and the urban poetry of early rap, this soundtrack set embodies the surprisingly rich musical diversity of the much malligned 80's. I can't think of anyone putting out such an eclectic and complete set as this. This hits all its spots, and I highly recommend it.

Oh, and no. Aneka's "Japanese Boy" is most definetly not included in this collection. Trust me. I *actually* own the box set.

4.0 out of 5 stars ALL 80's! BUT NOT ALL SONGS..., December 26, 2002
By Alejandro Albiar-Carmona (Sacramento, CA USA) - See all my reviews
After purchasing this MAIBATSU MONSTROSITY of a Box Set, it was clear to see this was an outstanding soundtrack! The music does it's magic of making you feel like your back in the 80's!
The Box set contains seven outstanding CD's, from seven radio stations in the game. And although the following soundtrack was done well, there was a PROBLEM! After comparing the game manual's listing of music to the soundtracks list, some of the music was MISSING! Songs like Japanese Boy from Flash FM, and others were no where to be found in the box set. And after looking to see if there was enough space on each CD, there was at least a half an hour left on what looked to be an 80 minute disc! And to make things worse, some of the radio stations were MISSING AS WELL...
Although they didn't contain music, the missing radio stations were the ones like kchat, and the other talk shows. From what I heard, the talk shows seemed hilarious on the PS2, and would've been a good addition to the collection! Overall, this soundtrack has been done well, but don't expetc ALL the songs from the game to be there!
