5.0 out of 5 stars Marion's Prime, August 27, 2003
By Wayne E. Trujillo (Lakewood, CO United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
What Marion Williams displayed throughout her career was a determination to merge art with annointing. Her latter work on Spirit Feel approached the passion of this earlier recording, but seldom has she seemed as zesty, confident, and vigorous. Her relative youth and enthusiasm after leaving the Clara Ward Singers (along with the other singers who comprised the Stars of Faith), and a desire to succeed without Clara's guidance, were probably instrumental in this CD (two releases combined for repackage) being the masterpiece it's regarded. Ms Williams was relatively unknown when she received the Kennedy Center Honors less than a year prior to her death. Still attending a Pentacostal church in North Philly, she carried a devotion to her religion that carried over into rock, soul, and pop (and the Civil Rights Movement) with its unihibited ecstacy and defined her recordings as exemplars of passion-- leveling the line between church and state; secular and sacred. While critics regularly hailed her as among the greatest-- if not the greatest-- singers in America, she praised her God, called the honors "miracles", and told this writer that she never dreamed her talent would take her from the "dusty streets of Miami into the greatest halls in Europe and America". Well, with the honors received and influence imparted, even if she couldn't imagined the places her talent would take her as a teenager, it doesn't take more than a spin of this CD in hindsight for listeners to easily understand the honors and accolades Marion Williams received during her lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marion Williams' Masterpiece, November 30, 2002
By Jon Landau (New York) - See all my reviews
This magnificent record is simply overwhelming. Every member of Marion's group the Stars of Faith shine on this CD, but Marion utterly dominates with the depth of her emotion and her explosive, shattering singing. Of all the available titles, this one best represents her work after leaving Clara Ward. A must for anyone who cares about the art of gospel music.
