5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic-o!, November 6, 2004
By David Vinson (Montevallo, AL United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Just goes to show how commonly debated and ultimately misunderstood the Fall are when one takes a look at the idiot who gave this album a one star review.

"Extricate" is a great recording by the Fall, an angry but also suprisingly sentimental piece of music by the always grumpy Mark E. Smith. This was recorded after Mark's split-up with wife and fellow bandmate, Brix Smith. Considering that she left him for a violinist and that the album opens brilliantly, sarcastically, and defiantly with the intentionally ugly sound of violins screeching away, one must give a nod to Mark. Amidst all that bitterness is a great sense of humor.

If you're a fan like I am, then you can start here for the more recent work. "Levitate" and "The Marshall Suite" are also well-worth buying, as are the newer ones like "Unutterable" and "Country on the Click." It's impossible for me to summarize this record; like all Fall records it's all over the place; but that's what I love about this band and the ideas swimming around in Smith's head--they're never, ever boring; and somehow, each record manages to be distinguishable from the next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Fall Album, September 12, 2006

It is hard to compare Fall albums, there are so many, but you have to appreciate the homage to Frank Zappa found in the song, "I'm Frank." Arms Control Poseur is fun. This as the first Fall album I ever bought and still like it. Buy it! Mark E. Smith is amazing and I hope he manages to keep togther enough of a band to continue for a long time.

1.0 out of 5 stars zero talent (updated 8-12-05), April 8, 2004
By Rich Latta (Albuquerque, NM - Land of Entitlement) - See all my reviews
Tried to like this but nothing turned me on. These songs just aren't any good.

UPDATE: anyone who needs to call someone an idiot like the guy above me for merely expressing an opinion is pretty closed-minded. You're the pot calling the kettle black there buddy!

EXTRICATE is listed in at least one other place on this forum, and I feel somewhat vindicated by a few reviews there that claim this is horrible Fall. So because of them and the fact that I've heard people praise this band to the heavens, I'll be giving the Fall another try. Unfortunately, this was my first CD by this band. I was told a while back that if I didn't like this one then there's no need to look further into the Fall's catalogue. I'm glad I figured out that this might not be the case, but I stand by my original opinion: however cool the "sound" of this band may be on EXTRICATE, the songs themselves fall completely flat. This sucks!
