Before Harry Potter entered Hogwarts Academy, a few students at Kitanohashi High School began using magic to challenge an alien ship that landed on Earth. Takeo, the president of the Magic Club, is a bespectacled nerd who wants to impress girls; the androgynous/transvestite vice president, Aburatsubo, flirts with Takeo. The newest member of the club is enthusiastic but klutzy Sae, who keeps ignoring the efforts of her best friend, Nanaka to get her to quit the club.This slapstick teen comedy began as a six-part OVA in 1996, which was followed the next year by a 13-episode broadcast series. Magic User's Club offers an unremarkable array of characters and standard jokes about cleavage and girl's underwear. The one original touch is the way Takeo's face turns into a sign when he's thinking. It's silly and mildly funny, but hardly memorable. (Rated 13 and older: violence, risqué humor) --Charles Solomon
