Editorial Reviews

Alan Fark, Minor 7th, January/February 2003

"Breath(es) into his personal brand of music the same freshness as contemporaries Radiohead and Beck....great stuff."

Product Description

A passionate and relentlessly melodic record that hauls you into the place where modern rock meets pop and shades of hip hop. Signs of Passing includes exquisite production and the possibility of addiction to the 'back' and 'repeat' buttons.

4.0 out of 5 stars No boundries, July 19, 2003
By Jeff Campbell (Bray, IRL) - See all my reviews
Methodical and thoughtful, spontaneous and whimsical. Inteligent rock & pop. Inspires dreams and introspection. MC 900 ft Jesus morphs with Elvis Costello & Sting; a good thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublimely haunting, richly textured, July 12, 2003
By Mark C Steele (Portland, ME United States) - See all my reviews
This sublimely haunting ALBUM has amazing song writing and masterful production quality, especially with the glassy hi-ends of the radiant accoustic guitar picking, the sizzling cymbals and slippery vocals.
Every listen, I am absorbed fully by it, from the first song to the last. Thanks Mr. Bonner, for bringing back the ALBUM! This is no collection of crappy cuts highlighted by one or two decent singles like so many major label CDs today. It's a whole ALBUM, and like another reviewer mentioned, it's different every time you listen to it. These lyrically complex and thoughtfully crafted songs remind me of the records I was so into in the '80s. (This doesn't mean it's retro or cheesy at all, though.) It has the earthy storytelling of Robby Robertson, the ambient aural eeriness of Pink Floyd, the rich composition of Sting, and the sweet floating vocals of the Samples' Sean Kelly (minus that Kermit the Frog droning quality).
Sometimes serious, sometime hilarious, but always passionate and intense. It will grow on you. Give it a listen, and another, and another ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Signs of Passing, March 24, 2003
By Will S. (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews
Occasionally there is an album that seemingly recreates itself each time it is spun. 'Signs of Passing' is such an album. Bonner's rhythms and drive create a spectrum of surreal and real moods; soulfully crafted lyrics animate these moods. Humor, satire, desire, introspection, contemplation. All are effortlessly found here. 'Signs of Passing' is a listener's cerebral refuge - may it also be a sign of things to come for Matt Bonner and his band.

The music is quite the experience. Every song takes you on an adventure and taps into different emotions. Especially appreciated the blended styles - rhythms and vocals. Read more
