Zafferano means saffron in Italian, and this saffron-yellow dinnerware with blue flowers adds a summery touch to the table any time of the year. The five-piece dinnerware set, service for one, consists of an 11-inch dinner plate, 8-inch salad plate, 8-1/2-inch soup or pasta bowl, 8-ounce cup, and a 6-inch saucer. Overlaid with sprigs of flowers, the yellow center on the dinner plate radiates outward like rays of sunshine. Clusters of dots in two shades of blue ring the bowl and salad plate. The cup is glazed white on the inside and the saucer features a yellow wash with a blue stripe around the rim. Large and flat with just a slightly upturned rim, the dinner plate can also double as a serving platter for luncheon sandwiches or a small cake.
Made in Italy of chip-resistant ceramic, each Caleca dinnerware piece is hand-painted by skilled artisans with glazes that meet US standards by being free of lead and cadmium. The hand-painting results in visible brush strokes with variations in tone that afford a casual, comfortable look. "Zafferano" - the Caleca pattern that reflects a scattering of delicate small powder-blue flowers. This decor's name derives from the strong presence of the typical Caleca yellow which distributes itself in the delicate plaid decoration and in its light brushed-stroked rays. "Zafferano"'s brightness illuminates conveying the flllowing message, "a sunny day in December as if to say, Summer is already here." Each Caleca ceramic piece is individually hand-painted and "autographed" on the bottom by its decorator, after which is applied the registered Caleca trademark, authenticating to the originality and high quality of the product. Just recently, Caleca Italia has reached a milestne in developing a new low porosity, extra strong, but lighter ceramic body comparable to stoneware, vitreous and porcelain, rendering the Caleca products highly resistant to chipping and prolonged usage. Born from an antique tradition of over two-hundred years, realized from the most modern system and created by artists of diversified nationalities, the Caleca products are the fruit of a perfect fusion of tradition, good taste and technology.
