Serving the needs of those with Alzheimer's (and other forms of dementia), the Memory Lane Company offers this 30-minute film to stimulate and entertain through a guided audio-visual feast of family milestones. A dozen short vignettes pair common life experiences--from babies to baseball--with familiar, comforting music to kindle memories. The resulting nostalgic stroll becomes a useful tool to foster connections with loved ones and caregivers. Beginning with Rodgers and Hammerstein's "My Favorite Things," the musical selections are masterfully chosen to accompany each thematic grouping of images. The traditional song, "Happy Birthday to You" plays as smiling children blow out candles; Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" is paired with beautiful brides. A segment on family vacations presents famous landmarks, while one on '50s dancing offers jubilant jitterbug moves. The variety of themes (Halloween, graduation, bicycles, etc.) accommodate viewers with varied interests. The Memory Lane Family DVD triggers good memories and is reminiscent of a journey through a life well lived. Children dance through gardens, couples date and marry, babies smile as from a dream. Beautiful images encourage memories of a lifetime of love and family life. The photo collection, home movies and personal stories are set to memorable music and well-known songs that produce a sense of nostalgia.

This DVD compliments the Family Memory Book and Family Memory CD. The Memory Lane products encourage positive emotions and social connections. They can be used in private homes, nursing homes, hospices, clinics, hospitals and adult day care centers.

What I especially like about the Memory Lane video, FAMILY, is that it generates as well as captures the warmth of universal family experiences and memories. As it spans the decades of family life, it also provides a chance to build new bridges among those viewing it in the here and now. It's almost like viewing a family tree from two perspectives: over the generations and across the room.

Most of the images and icons in FAMILY blend what is special in the memories of older people with what they have shared with others--- for example, a crackling baseball radio broadcast, teen couples dancing the jitterbug in the 1950s and a birthday cake----the kinds of shared experiences that are general, delightful and common enough to be understood and enjoyed by all who view them.

The interviewed seniors and narration are equally warm, engaging and comfortably famliar----as is the music, which accurately, brightly and richly captures the era, the moment and the meaning of the visual content.

In a sense, FAMILY speaks for, as well as to, all memory-impaired grandparents, because it is as much an opportunity for them to show as well as to see their lives and times; and for the viewer who is not memory-impaired, it is a reminder of how good family life at its best is and can be.
