4.0 out of 5 stars The greatest songwriter you've never heard, December 30, 2005
By Karl Siever (Richmond, Virginia United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
R. Stevie has been creating music since the mid-70s. Most of his output is done all by himself, as he plays many instruments. His stuff has always been hard-to-find due to his apparent dislike of record companies. Through the early part of his career his material was mostly available on homemade cassettes, which he distributed himself. He did occasionally record in a studio, and also compiled some of the cassette material for release. This compilation comes from these sources. These days his stuff is available on www.rsteviemoore.com, or at times here on Amazon.

The music on this set covers a wide array of styles. R. Stevie is probably best placed in the "Pop" genre, similar to say a Brian Wilson or Todd Rundgren. But he also strays into folk, country, funk, hard rock, and other styles. He has a wicked sense of humor and parody (note the CD's title) and often adapts his lyrical style to the genre of the song. Very often he chooses some interesting covers, to which he applies inventive interpretation. His best material on this disc is often quite impressive for its melodic quality and innovation. There are, IMO, some occasional "misses", but these are few, and Stevie is always interesting if nothing else.

Greatesttits is an excellent collection to introduce yourself to this prolific artist.
