About the Artist
Gavin Dunaway met Kate Rears while playing in a goth/industrial band. Kate, playing cello in the group, and Gavin immediately hit it off through a mutual love of ‘90s alternative rock bands such as the Smashing Pumpkins, HUM, Failure, and Stone Temple Pilots. They began writing songs together in early 2004 with Kate switching to bass. At first they jokingly called themselves “The Alphabetical Order,” but the name stuck. Gavin’s old friend Ben Reynolds was brought in on drums (replaced in 2005 by Chris McKinney). The trio quickly recorded a demo, and Gabe Fry was brought in on guitar and keyboards to fill out the sound. In a matter of months the band had played DC mainstays such as the Velvet Lounge, Warehouse Next Door, the Black Cat, and DC9, and were receiving more show offers than they could accept. The Alphabetical Order joined the now-defunct Washington band union, Local 221 and signed their demo to the upstart label District Records. They began to receive airplay on local and international internet radio stations and their song “Pillars of Salt” appeared on the soundtrack to an independent film. The band shared the stage and became friends with many DC vets like Gist, Los Hermanos Rodriguez, and Run Silent Run Deep. Chatter about their high-energy, almost chaotic live performances spread across the DC rock scene, leading to interviews in DCist.com and the Washington CityPaper. All the while, the Order’s fan base expanded enough to help them win the first two rounds of the Emergenza music festival and play the Washington final at the 9:30 Club. In June of 2005, The Alphabetical Order released “The Unimpeachable EP,” a six-song album recorded at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, Virginia. The album, produced by T.J. Lipple and Chad Clark (Medications), captures the intensity of the Order’s live performances while playing up the swift dynamic changes in the songs and the band’s pop sensibilities. Gavin and Kate switch off on lead vocals and harmonize their distinctive voices while Gabe’s guitar flourishes flow on top of Ben’s aggressive drumming. While the group’s 90s alternative influences are on clear display, the band also experiments with feedback and noise and new-wave style synths. All in all, the album is an exciting release from one of DC’s most interesting up and coming bands.

Product Description
A six-song EP reminiscent of such '90s alternative bands like the Smashing Pumpkins, HUM, Failure, and Sunny Day Real Estate. Recorded by T.J. Lipple and Chad Clark (Medications) at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, VA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gavin Dunaway is my baby daddy!, October 19, 2005
By Stephen Losey (burke virginia represent!) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Gavin may be a deadbeat dad, but he was a surprisingly tender lover.
No, seriously, The Alphabetical Order is a great band out of DC. And since I went to high school with Gavin, some might accuse me of being a biased source. Not true! I'm always looking for a reason to drag Gavin down, but unfortunately, TAO's music doesn't give me much of an excuse to. The songs are catchy and well-played, each song has its own style, and their live shows are always a good time.
They're playing Iota in Arlington, Va. this Saturday, Oct. 22. If you ask Gavin nicely, he'll show you his piercing.
All right, Dunaway, I pimped myself out for you. You know what I need now. *wink*

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this EP right now and play it through high-quality headphones pressed to your gonads for your unconceived children!, May 26, 2006
By Second String (Alexandria, VA) - See all my reviews
Witty, personal, tragic, intelligent, politically incisive and at times bleakly ontological lyrics influenced by everyone from Kurt Cobain to Jean-Luc Godard aren't even the biggest reason to buy this groundbreaking first offering by a band that has already influenced my own work along with that of many other excellent, cutting-edge musicians on both sides of Amerika. Buy this E.P. because it completely rocks, and it goes above and beyond your radio-fed low expectations of what rock can mean. TAO have the potential to transform not only how music sounds in America, but also our notions of what songs can be about, in a way that just feels natural and right. Imagine watching David Bowie and Liz Phair make out with Jenna Jameson on acid, and then Jenna slowly removes her dark sunglasses and beckons to you as she tucks them away in the tight pocket of her thin white shirt. It's like that, only Michael Jordan and Jackie Chan are there cheering you on. This little compact disk will inspire you to change your taste in music, change your Occupation, change your shorts, and change your life. Put down that Shotglass, zip up your fly and act now, before it's too late to say you liked them before they were cool.

Peace,

Second String
