4.0 out of 5 stars Funny, sad, inspiring, depressing, April 29, 2008
I was skeptical about ths book because Oprah recommended it, and I'm not a real fan of her choices. She had recommended another Lamb book that I did think was excellent, and that's why I chose to read this one.

There's enough information out there that will tell you what this book is about so I won't go into that, but I will say that the parts of this story that just made me laugh was how Wally Lamb took me on a trip down Memory Lane.

This story covers 31 years of a woman's life and Lamb nailed it beautifully when he placed the story's timeline in the pop culture of American suburbia. The only thing I'm not sure he got right chronologically was the return of the astronauts (Armstrong et al.) but seeing how he was so dead on with everything else, he's probably right about that, too.

As sad as this story can be at times, I didn't feel that Lamb was trying to manipulate me into feeling sorry for Dolores. Anyone who reads this book will relate to SOMETHING this woman has gone through: divorce, mental illness, violence, self-image problems, obesity, loneliness. Her sense of humor is so delightful that at times I found myself laughing out loud during some of her greatest tribulations.

I loved all the characters in this story; everyone served a purpose and the whole thing came together beautifully. No wasted pages, no pointless points, I read it in two days while on travel.

I found Wally Lamb's second book (I Know This Much Is True) to be better for completely different reasons, but that doesn't take anything away from She's Come Undone.

Highly recommend it. Good read for high school students.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Life Full of Pain, October 20, 2008
By Terri J. Rice "ricepaper" (Pasco, WA United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
At 465 pages, the book seemed like a bit too much of an investment for, what appeared to be, a pretty silly and trite book.

However, just 100 pages into the book so much had happened to Delores Price that I wondered how Wally Lamb was going to be able to fill up the next 465 pages. But he does and he does an excellent job. Delores is a complex and interesting character as she goes through so many intense events in her life that you just have to read to the end to see what becomes of her life.

lamb does an incredible job of thinking, acting and speaking for his character Delores Price.
