Product Description

More organizations use Exchange Server than any other e-mail server. The new release, Exchange Server 2003, is the most reliable and secure version Microsoft has ever produced. Exchange 2000 was a disappointing release, resulting in a much lower migration rate than expected. The advance buzz around Exchange 2003, however, has been much more positive, creating the strong possibility that there will be a much faster and more extensive move to Exchange 2003. While there have been a few comprehensive, features-based guides to Exchange, and one quick reference, Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Distilled will be the first task-based, tips and techniques guide for the many experienced system administrators who don't need to go over the basics yet again. Scott Schnoll is uniquely qualified to write this book. He is a widely recognized expert on this topic through his extensive work over the last 16 months as part of an exclusive group working with the beta, his status as an Exchange MVP for six years, his position as the Exchange Expert on SearchWin2000.com, and his many articles and speaking engagements. This book will be invaluable to both administrators evaluating moving to Exchange 2003 as well as those already adopting Exchange 2003.

From the Back Cover

“Scott Schnoll’s clear, concise writing style and diverse knowledge make his Exchange 2003 book readable and valuable to anyone deploying, inheriting, or considering Exchange Server 2003. An excellent, thorough, all-purpose Exchange book.”

William Lefkovics, Senior Messaging and Systems Analyst, eEye Digital Security

Nearly three years in the making, Exchange Server 2003 is the most reliable and secure messaging solution that Microsoft has ever produced. Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Distilled is a practical, hands-on guide designed to bring readers quickly up to speed on the latest changes and enhancements to the leading e-mail server.

Drawing on his involvement in Microsoft’s Exchange Server 2003 Joint Development Program, author Scott Schnoll offers the detailed technical information that Exchange administrators need to know. He has a clear and concise style, and focuses on what’s new, what’s improved, and what’s been removed from Exchange Server 2003. Throughout the book Scott illustrates key points with real-world scenarios, and provides best practices drawn from his years of experience working with Exchange.

You will find answers to a variety of important questions, such as:

  • What features have been included in Exchange Server 2003 to replace Exchange Server 2000 and 5.5 features? Chapter 3
  • How do you use Internet Mail Wizard to configure Exchange for Internet messaging? Chapter 4
  • What does Exchange Server 2003 offer for remote security, and how can you now better block unwanted e-mail? Chapter 6
  • How do you back up, restore, and recover data using Recovery Storage Groups, Windows Volume Shadow Service, and other features? Chapter 8
  • How do you use the new Outlook Mobile Access and Exchange ActiveSync features? Chapter 9
  • What tuning and configuration patterns will work best for your organization? Chapter 10

5.0 out of 5 stars Implementing, managing Exchange? This is for you!, June 1, 2004
By Peter O Dowd (Wellington New Zealand) - See all my reviews
Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Distilled, is the perfect title for this book. There is a mammoth amount of material distilled into these 570 pages. Scott's real-world experience with Exchange is represented on every page. This book isn't just about 'how', it's about 'why', 'when' and 'where'.
The technical content is deep in places yet represented in a easy to understand, relevant way. Scott has taken care to provide links allowing the reader to drill down even beyond the scope of the book if required.
If you need a one-stop source for the new features of Exchange Server 2003, and their relevancy to your organisation, then this is the book you should get. If you're experienced in Exchange 5.5 and/or Exchange 2000, then this will give you a quick upskill in Exchange Server 2003. Even if you are completely new to Exchange Server 2003 then the text is clear and concise.
This is a must for any Exchange administrator, and it's fun to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on all the changes., October 6, 2004
By Network Guy (Washington, DC United States) - See all my reviews
At first, I didn't think there could be a whole book on just the changes between 2000 and 2003. Boy was I wrong.

This is an excellent book for a seasoned Exchange 2000 administrator upgrading to 2003. It's ok for people trying to learn Exchange, but it assumes quite a bit of knowledge - I'd suggest getting on of the Microsoft Press Exchange 2000 books, learning that, and then getting this one.

Overall, excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for any Exchange administrator!, July 24, 2004
Its quite obvious that the author has many years in the field working with Exchange, and the fact that his experiences are interwoven into this book (along with his easy to read writing style) makes this book one of my favorites. Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Distilled covers a tremendous amount of highly relevant and useful information. Its a great resource for anyone that wants or needs to better understand how Exchange 2003 works, and in what circumstances to configure particular features. I am so glad that he wrote it, and that I now have it in my own Exchange resource library! It is also worth noting that since writing this book, the author has joined the Exchange User Education team at Microsoft. His expertise is widely acknowledged, and his book an invaluable resource.
