Gr 7-10-Students will find much information in this volume. The early techniques and players are discussed as is the instrument's rise in popularity, its variations, and its sound. Several bassists are highlighted, with the emphasis on their playing and with whom they played. Brief biographical information is included, and each bassist's influence is discussed. One chapter is devoted to great "sidemen and leaders" and another provides a quick outline of major influences in the jazz world through the decades. In the final chapter, musicians respond to questions such as "Do you remember when you first started improvising?" Black-and-white photographs of the artists and fluid drawings in shades of gray border and occasionally provide an illustrative background for the text. Internet sites are listed, with the caveat that they may be outdated or unavailable. Readers with little or no musical background may have difficulty with some of the terminology. However, for those wishing to gain in-depth knowledge of this art and its evolution, this volume will provide a clear source of information.-Allison Trent Bernstein, Blake Middle School, Medfield, MA
