Product Description
An astonishing narrative poem using the colorful and daring characters of the Globe Theatre during the life of Shakespeare to create the incredible voices of its actors, bit players, poets, stage managers and lovelorn ladies of his day. Shakespeare, his wife, his Dark Lady and his poor dead boy all spring from the pages with fact and fiction intertwined into a virtuoso book that will redefine the classroom's experience of Elizabethan studies. A new and provocative approach to a beloved subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Narrative poetry at its best, December 12, 2003
By "klh91" (Idaho Springs, CO United States) - See all my reviews
If you like poetry, but love a good story even more, this book will deliver. The author does a great job of weaving in an interesting, page-turning story while offering beautifully written poetry along the way.

I got caught up in the story of the fictional Mary Burbage, who loved William Shakespeare from afar, as well as the host of other memorable characters, both fictional and those based on historical accounts of Shakespeare's life at the The Globe.

Shakespeare lovers will adore this book---a must-have. But even those with only a slight knowledge of Shakespeare's world (that was me before reading the book) will find the story fulfilling.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem, December 22, 2003
Michelle Cameron has written a novel/poem that is both a fast-moving story and a narrative poem filled with layers of meaning. Here is the world of Shakespeare, seen through the eyes of historical and fictional characters.

Mary Burbage, Cameron's fictional invention, tells a tale of unrequited love for the Bard himself. This theme forms the backdrop for stories from theater owner, actors, clowns, and apprentices. Most touching to me were the women's voices, including Shakespeare's abandoned wife and Anne Phillips, wife of an actor who must feed and house apprentices.

If you love Elizabethan England, you'll recognize the depth of Cameron's scholarship while you enjoy the lilting beauty of her poetry. If you've never before been a fan of Shakespeare or history, give yourself the treat of reading this book!

Buy this book! It's a gem!
