The award-winning tile based board game is finally here on Android! Just a few years after its release, Carcassonne became a modern classic and a must-play. Turn by turn, the players create a landscape by placing tiles with roads, cities, fields, and cloisters. The players deploy their followers - knights, monks, thieves, or farmers - to earn points. The player with the most points after the final scoring wins the game. The ever-changing landscape makes each game a new experience. You can play against clever AI opponents or with up to 5 other players in an online or local multiplayer match.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally it's here for Android! May 11, 2012
Verified Purchase
I was introduced to the board game "Carcassonne" a couple of years ago by a relative, and since then, we and our wives have played several times, and it's always a lot of fun. Unfortunately, we can't all get together too often, so I've been hoping that an Android version would be released, and now it's here.

I'm playing Carcassonne on my Kindle Fire, which has a nice screen size for the game. If you're not familiar with Carcassonne, it's a unique game where players build the landscape from colorful tiles containing pieces of fields, roads, cities, and cloisters. In turn, each player positions their tiles, and optionally, places a "Meeple" on any of several locations on the tile. The game continues until the tiles run out or none of the remaining tiles are playable. Points are awarded for controlling fields, roads, cities, and cloisters, and the player with the highest score wins. It's actually much easier to play than it sounds, but learning the proper strategies takes a while. There is some luck involved, since the tiles are dealt randomly, but as with any game that has an element of luck, skill will win out in the long run.

To me, the video version of Carcassonne has three big pluses compared to the board game:

1. There's no argument about whether a tile placement is legal. The screen shows every possible legal tile placement, and you can't place a tile anywhere else.

2. The game automatically keeps score during the game, and it counts the additional points that are awarded at the end of the game. In the board game, this was a real hassle sometimes, and it slowed down the game.

3. You don't have to have live players. I've been playing against four AI opponents, and they play a pretty good game.

Well worth the money. It is currently the best app I have for the Kindle Fire. The AI is challenging enough to keep my attention (in fact I always lose on higher difficulties). I am not a big fan of Carcassonne the board game, but it works very well as a mobile app. The computer takes care of all the scoring and bookkeeping.

This app offers a lot of options for setup, you can choose different rule sets, number of opponents, etc. It also comes with The River expansion.

Also a plea to developers: I want good, modern board games like Puerto Rico or Catan on my Kindle Fire, I am willing to pay $5 a pop for them if they are the quality of Carcassonne. Many of these are available in the Google play store right now, please bring them over to the Amazon store as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great app, buggy expansions! June 8, 2014

Our family loves playing Carcasonne (the board game), but scoring at the end of the game is always a pain. The app faithfully replicates the game, and it handles the scoring for you.

The expansions are not worth the price; if you don't have an internet connection on your device, then the expansions that you paid for are not available to you. Half the time when I *do* have an internet connection, they still won't show up as enabled. If the developer would fix this issue, I'd give the app a higher rating.

3.0 out of 5 stars great game but EATS BATTERY January 5, 2013
Verified Purchase
Pro: I love the board game version and this is a perfect clone of the board game experience. It manages legal plays, scoring, etc in a very clear and quick manner which would help someone who has never played before quite a bit.
Con:Battery life! This app eats more power than any other game or app I've ever had on my phone. Wouldn't be a problem if you're on a tablet at home, but on my galaxy nexus it makes for more frequent charging.
Only other con is that I'm used to playing with more expansions, so this feels a bit short. I would buy a pack of expansions for this in a heartbeat.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great game, terrible update! June 1, 2014

I loved playing this game! Almost as good as playing the tabletop version! But...this update is terrible! So buggy! My game will start, jump to the end of the game, tally up everyone's scores (we all get 0), then switch the language into German! If you have already bought the game DON'T UPDATE!!! If you don't have the game, I'd advise you to hold off from downloading until this version is patched.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carcassone, There's An App for That! December 27, 2012
Verified Purchase
Words I never thought I'd speak, err, type. The only app I have yet to buy (okay,I seriously just upgraded my phone about two weeks ago as my xmas present to myself). Until I saw one of my favorite board games if all times, I swore I'd only download free apps, and it's an oath I kept, until Carcassone!

So, what I love about this app is that you can play with up to five computer players or human players, me and my son played a game one night. However, if you're playing a two player human game, it can get a bit confusing and is slower than one vs AI. But I do love the automatic scorekeeping, tile sneak peeking, and how it exes out unusable places once those tiles are no longer in game.

I also like that it has River expansion, but would love to see more expansions in the future! Princess and the Dragon anyone? And I know someone already commented on this, but I must agree tenfold, I would love love love online play!

All in all though, this is a great game! If you love the board game version, you'll love the app. It's a great way to be able to finally play by yourself when everybody else refuses to play it with you anymore after you keep whooping them! Five stars!
