4.0 out of 5 stars HOW DO WE REACT IN A DISASTER?, September 16, 2006
By
Severin Olson (Hyattsville, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The face of disaster (Hardcover)
Written back in the 50's, the focus of this work is on what people do and how they react after a disaster. Robinson examines several horrific events of the last century and tells us what most thought of first, what they did, and how long it took to get life back to normal. Sections of the book deal with the issues of panic, looting, survivor guilt and heroism. If you have ever wondered how your community will behave under the circumstances, this book will surely give you some insight.

This work is so out of date it is actually interesting to read for that reason alone. In the first chapter, we hear of expensive homes destroyed in New England. The homes were valued at $15,000! But readers will also notice that the style is very different from what were used to. A fifties era optimism pervades the writing. In the last chapter, for instance, the author describes America after a full nuclear exchange with the Soviets. Millions have been killed and whole cities destroyed, with little or no medical care to be had. Yet Robinson sees us as getting back to normal fairly quickly, digging and rebuilding. It is hard to imagine anyone writing like that today.
