Portrait of the Artist in a World Long Gone...,
This review is from: Far Off Things (Paperback)
A writer's autobiography. Arthur Machen grew up in Wales in the late 19th century, the only son of an Oxford-educated (and very poor) vicar. He was a talented child, with an affinity for the natural landscape he grew up in, and a passion for books and for London. He was unable to pursue his education due to his family's deteriorating finances, so went to London doing literary odd-jobs, and spending his time trying to create literary "fire", and exploring the streets of Victorian London. It is wistful look by the older writer looking back at his younger self. And it is a heartfelt poem to that childhood and his native country. Well worth reading, if you enjoy his fiction (especially Hill of Dreams), or wish to see glimpses of a time and place long faded away. |
