5.0 out of 5 stars The book of John opened for the common person, June 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The farewell discourse and final prayer of Jesus: An exposition of John 14-17 (Hardcover)
In typical fashion Don Carson has done an outstanding job in bringing the book of John to the common reader. His style is easy to read and his homiletic is right on the mark. His rework of the upper room story is brilliant.

John 14-17, I think is one of the hardest parts of the Bible. The discourse ebbs and flows covering many topics, and is esoteric and Jesus language, presumptous in parts. Don Carson does the background work of that presumption for you. But, typical of the Book of John and my understanding of it, I'm sure I'll have a different opinion in a months time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enlightening, April 8, 2010
The venerable D.A. Carson provides here a brilliant unpacking of the end of John -- the most poetic, most spiritual, and (for my money, anyway) most confusing of the Gospels.

Carson's "explanation of the issues involved could not be more clear.... Because Carson roots his exposition in the original context, he can apply it directly and practically to the situations of modern readers. This book is thrilling and heart-warming...."
- Christopher Hingley, The Evangel

"Here is scholarship at its best, a clear, well-reasoned, understandable account."
- Derek Swann, Evangelical Times

"...highly recommended for its homilectic and expositional values. The preacher who likes to prepare expository sermons willl find invaluable guidelines in exegesis, illustrations, and inspirational poetry."
- Sherwood Smith, Seminary Review
