Following "TEXAS", released in 2003, the songs and bio documentary fragments on "FEBRUARY" may come as a surprise. They represent musical and intellectual growth in equal measure. But like the former, this one will take a while to sink in, I think. (Not that all good efforts get better with time, but "TEXAS" has become a classic to its fans.) Some songs on this one has been around for a while, and those of us that love The Matthew Show and Matt's work, have been getting familiar with the a them piece-meal, as it were, hearing it live here and there, plus his career on line, Second Life.
For a while It seemed that maybe "Texas" would be a one-hit wonder, but the five years since its release have not been wasted. Marriage, family life, living in New York for a couple of years, working and playing with a variety of musicians have enriched his vocabulary and the struggle to keep things going inform this work. The collaborations with musicians like Jeff Simms, Jason Jackson, Little Jack Melody, James Dunn, and a lot more add to the richness and texture of this work. The mood is reflective, nostalgic even, understated, but very much about life, here and now. America today, life with its warts and bruises... yet positive and uplifting in the same delicate balance. A meld of music and words, reflective and moody at once...
These are aural videos: the images they provoke project in the minds of the listeners. Lets hope we do not have to wait so long for more "Matthew Show"!!!!
