Three Americans travel to Cuba to immerse themselves in a culture with which the American government all but prohibits commercial contact. In Havana, the Americans stay for a while at a "Casa Particular," a private home or B&B, Cuban style. Later they head south toward the Bay of Pigs, Trinidad, Santa Clara, and their final destination: Santiago de Cuba. In Santiago they stay at another "Casa Particular," this one owned by Cesar, who in fact invites them to the family's Christmas feast, and it is this day of Christmas that gives the documentary an unexpected weight. Here, the Americans realize that it is impossible to visit Cuba only for its music and culture; that politics will always dominate. Here the storied Bay of Pigs fiasco is recalled in a startling way as the injustice of that invasion's aftermath and economic embargo - continuing now for nearing forty-five years - is carved into memory forever.
