4.0 out of 5 stars Glad to own this book
If you are an INXS/Hutch fan, you really must own this book. Depending on how big of a fan you are, you probably already know the contents of the book. If you are simply interested in dead rock stars, as it were, this book is a page turner to live vicariously through the author. If Mike Gee reads my review, please write a "sequel" We fans are hungry for more.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's more about INXS as a band than about Hutch as a person.
Of course, it was interesting for me as for an INXS fan but truthfully I expected something more. I have to admit, I was looking for more about his family, friends, his personal intrests, about his childhood. I also wanted a whole, complex interview of Hutch. Instead I got a huge one of Kirk. Anyway if you want to know about Hutch as a member of INXS- this is for you...

1.0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!, July 11, 2006
This review is from: The final days of Michael Hutchence (Paperback)
I had read mixed reviews of this book before picking it up, but I thought that I would give it a try nonetheless, as there isn't that much material available about Michael Hutchence as of yet. I almost went with the book by Michael's mom and half-sister but figured that their book would likely be biased.

In regards to Mike Gee's book, I know more about Michael Hutchence than this guy, and I certainly never had the privilege of interviewing or ever meeting the man. Gee, for some reason, has used this book, that should be about Michael Hutchence, to showcase his knowledge of other bands in Australia and his other random experiences. Why? I want to read about Michael Hutchence, not him.

In all honesty, this book is hardly about Michael Hutchence at all, and you certainly don't come away with a much better understanding of Michael's final days, or what may or may not have led up to his untimely demise. This was a major disappointment and the worst "biography" that I have ever read. There is no insight in this book at all. I would give it a rating of 0 stars, but that's not an option.

Now, I am just hoping that a more thorough and dedicated biographer comes along to do some justice to the memory and achievements of Michael Hutchence and INXS.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes entertaining, but no new insights..., December 5, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The final days of Michael Hutchence (Paperback)
If you are seeking further insights into the tragic death of Michael Hutchence, you won't find it here. The majority of the content appears to be gleaned from press articles and a number of interviews with INXS band members over the past several years. Although the book is sometimes entertaining, the author provides no further insights into Mr. Hutchence's suicide than what can be obtained from the band's many web sites. However, the book is entertaining at times and provides a basic history of INXS and Michael Hutchence's meteoric rise to super-stardom and tragic ending. In this sense, the book is worthwhile for new fans of the band. For those fans who have followed INXS since their glory days in the 80s, there is nothing new here.

This book so self-indulgent I could hardly get through it.
The author spends so much time talking about his own journeys. How he got here or there. Who he knows. Blah Blah Blah. I'm a huge fan of INXS and Michael Hutchence. That's what I wanted to read about so I was very disappointed.

If you think you'll be reading about Michael Hutchence, you'll be waiting a long time. For the most part all the author does is brag about himself and talks about other bands. Briefly talks about INXS and Michael here and there... You can be half way through the book and you're still wondering why you're reading this horribly written waste of paper. Do yourself a favor and skip it.

4.0 out of 5 stars an interesting, well-balanced look at a true rock icon, October 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The final days of Michael Hutchence (Paperback)
I was pleasantly surprised with this author's portrayal of a legendary rock icon who described himself simply as "just a man".

Mike Gee describes not only the trials and tribulations of Michael Hutchence , but also a well-documented study of the vehicle that catapulted him to superstardom, INXS, through the early days of playing the Australian music circuit and beyond.

Mr. Gee uses a sincere and candid approach in order to deliver an unbiased perspective of the triumphs and struggles that faced Michael throughout his lifetime, including his association with the media, relationships with women and musical peers, and his last, painful moments in a hotel room in Sydney, Australia.

The author attempts to provide many reports and references from multiple sources to tell this story, leaving the reader to come to his own conclusions about the factors that contributed to Michael's death. He also provides a good summary of the post-mortum aftermath that surrounded Michael's family and friends.

I recommend this book to anyone looking for a well-researched and retro-spective look at a legendary Australian rock band and a singer that journeyed through a complex and dramatic life that intrigued and mystified many.

5.0 out of 5 stars A most heart wrenching account of the life of an icon, October 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The final days of Michael Hutchence (Paperback)
When I heard that Michael Hutchence was found dead in his hotel room last November I was in complete shock. I felt like I had lost someone. I needed answers to so many questions. The top question, why?! I can remember exactly what I was Doing at the time of the tragic news, where I was and exactly what I was wearing. So naturaly when I saw some one wrote a book on the dreadful event I was very excited to recieve my selection. It does not answer all of my questions, but it brings me closer to my favorite musician. It has helped me gain some closeure to a most disturbing event in my life and so many others. If you liked or loved michael Hutchence or INXS I highly recommend this book to you. You will not be disappoited. We love you Michael, God bless you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasing, intresting but still bestowed, May 4, 1999
This review is from: The final days of Michael Hutchence (Paperback)
The book is a good book as any INXS fan can relate to the book. It 'helps' in understanding the route that INXS and Michael had went through on their journey of a thousand miles.

As a Perth boy myself, it has added more of an interest to me as here was where they really got started.

Even the books Michael read etc. Dosen't my or any other INXS fan, help to understand the real reason why. The sense of needing to know, I suppose!!!

Anyhow, a great book to read, I highly recommend the book. As it is hard to keep on answer why to yourself as you read the text.
